Synopsis (short abstract) The outbreak of conflict in the Sudan has driven over 5.4 million people to flee in search of safety. Of this total, over 290 000 have sought refuge in South Sudan – a place many had once called home; a place many had already once fled. But refugees and returnees arrived in a fragile humanitarian situation, where a cascade of overlapping crises, have strained local communities’ access to food and basic necessities. Thanks to the generous support from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, FAO is providing emergency livelihood kits to 9 000 food‑insecure returnee and host community households (54 000 people) in South Sudan to cope with strained resources, as well as boost households' agricultural and fish production. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of the affected communities.

    For more than two decades, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s northeastern Ituri province has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis marked by violent attacks perpetrated by non-state armed groups, triggering massive population displacements. In addition, many communities are affected by natural hazards, such as floods, landslides and drought, exacerbating their vulnerabilities and leading to increased levels of food insecurity. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis (October 2024), over 1.5 million people in Ituri are acutely food insecure (IPC Phase 3 or above). Alarmingly, 61 percent of those in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) are internally displaced people, who previously relied on agriculture for household consumption and income. About 82 percent of displaced people reside with host families, putting additional pressure on them given already limited resources.The Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide vulnerable households with timely, lifesaving food production and livelihoods assistance in Ituri. This will help them meet their most immediate needs while creating the conditions to strengthen their resilience.

    To mitigate the adverse impacts of El Niño on people’s lives and livelihoods in Nicaragua, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has received financial support from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities. The generous contribution will enable FAO to provide staple crop and vegetable seeds along with fertilizers to farming households affected by recurrent extreme climate events over the past three years. The support provided will contribute to quickly increasing households’ availability of and access to nutritious food. Technical assistance will also be provided to help recover their agricultural livelihoods following agricultural losses due to El Niño‑induced rainfall deficits as well as to strengthen their livelihoods resilience against below-average rainfall forecasts.

    La Niña significantly impacts the Asia-Pacific region, leading to above‑average rainfall that often results in severe flooding and cyclones, which damage agricultural and food systems. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Viet Nam and Fiji in particular are at high risk during the current La Niña cycle. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO through SFERA – Anticipatory Action window, to support over 5 900 families in high-risk areas in these three countries.
