Book (series)Aquatic Invasive Alien Species – Top Issues for their Management
Outcomes from the IFI/EIFAAC Freshwater Invasives – Networking for Strategy Conference, Galway, 9–11 April 2013
2015Also available in:
No results found. In November 2014, a new EU Regulation to address Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and protect biodiversity was published. This entered into force across the EU in January 2015. The aim of the Regulation is to ‘prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species’. In an effort to provide focus to the Regulation prior to its publishing and to identify the major issues relating to Invasive Alien Species in Europe, the views of invasive species experts from around the world were sought. These were consolidated at an international conference (Freshwater Invasives - Networking for Strategy (FINS)) that was held in Ireland in April 2013. A major outcome from this meeting of experts was the production of the Top 20 IAS issues that relate primarily to freshwater habitats but are also directly relevant to marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This list will support policy makers throughout the EU as preparations are made to implement this impor tant piece of legislation. A further outcome from the conference was the formation of an expert IAS Advisory Group to support EIFAAC in its work on invasive species. -
Book (series)Terminal evaluation of the project “Strengthening and development of instruments for the management, prevention and control of beaver (Castor canadensis), an invasive alien species in the Chilean Patagonia”
Project code: GCP/CHI/034/GFF - GEF ID: 5506
2023Also available in:
The project, funded by GEF, aimed to improve the institutional frameworks for the control, prevention and management of the invasive exotic species in high value ecosystems for biodiversity in the Magellan region and Chilean Antarctica. In addition, the project tried to address the conservation of biodiversity in the management of productive landscapes. Some of the final evaluation results highlights are: i) the set-up of a governance model for the management and control of the beaver in the Magallanes region, with a Management Plan in the process of being approved; ii) the creation and implementation of the coordinated information, monitoring and early alert system (SIAT); and iii) the implementation of a communication strategy starting at the beginning of the project, iv) the implementation of demonstrative practices in piloting areas. -
Book (series)Terminal evaluation of the project "Strengthening of governance for the protection of biodiversity through the formulation and implementation of the National Strategy on Invasive Alien Species
Project code: GCP/ARG/023/GFF - GEF ID: 4758

The project, implemented in Argentina between July 2015 and June 2022, had the objectives of developing a framework strengthened governance that allows the effective protection of biodiversity against the impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) and enhances the current and future socioeconomic benefits derived from the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The evaluation estimates that as a result of the implementation of the project, Argentina is better prepared to face the challenge of IAS management and has made progress towards enhancing the socioeconomic benefits derived from the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity by controlling IAS.
