2006International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) were originally produced as separate booklets. The current book was produced by the IPPC Secretariat according to the decision made by the Interim Commission for Phytosanitary Measures at its Seventh session in 2005 (ICPM-7). It compiles all ISPMs without modification to their content, except in relation to the section Definitions, as decided by ICPM-7. The book is also available on line on the IPPC website at https://www.ippc.in t. In addition, individual standards are available on the IPPC website as extracts from the book. -

No results found.An fundamental activity of national plant protection organizations is to conduct pest surveillance. For the purpose of international trade, the results of pest surveillance provide the basis for pest listing, identification of pest status, pest categorization and the conduct of pest risk analyses. In 1997, the International Plant Protection Convention issued the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) No. 6: Guidelines for surveillance to assist national organizations in the imp lementation of this critical activity. In 2011, it was decided to review these guidelines and identify challenges faced by the contracting parties for implementation, as well as identify resources for resolving those challenges. At the request of the Standards Committee of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), the Implementation Review and Support System will catalogue the challenges faced and make recommendations to the review panel of ISPM No. 6 on ways to improve the standard. It will also gather examples of best practices globally so that appropriate training materials and manuals might be prepared under the capacity development programme of the IPPC. For the purpose of this review, a questionnaire was developed and distributed among national plant protection organizations. Seventeen countries from Asia and the Pacific region responded to this call and completed the questionnaire, composed of three parts: the questionnaire, technical resources and best practices. Th e results from the survey were compiled and analyzed, and are presented in this publication, which reflects the current status of pest surveillance in the region. Conclusions and recommendations are included in the report. -

No results found.Phytosanitary measures are often required for imported commodities to prevent the introduction of quarantine pests. Such measures need to be appropriate for a specific commodity and effective against the quarantine pests of that commodity. Among the options available, heat treatment is regarded as one the measures that is environmentally friendly and free from residues. Endorsed by the twenty-third session of the Asia and Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August 2003, these guidelines describe methods for identifying and developing appropriate heat disinfestation treatments against quarantine fruit flies in host commodities traded by APPPC member countries. Regional standards for phytosanitary measures are developed and adopted by APPPC as part of the plant protection programme of the Commission's contracting parties to support regional harmonization and facilitate trade of commodities by member countries.

Annex 3, Appendix 1 and Appendix 2 of ISPM 26 also apply to this standard. -

No results found.Soil resources constitute the very foundation of agriculture, so sustainable agriculture is inherently dependent on soil health. Soil health reflects the capacity of soil to respond beneficially to agricultural management, maintaining both agricultural production and the provision of varying ecosystem services, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity conservation in the long term. Soil health depends on the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the soil that are required for plant growth and development. Ecological intensification differs from current strategies for agricultural intensification by embracing agroecological transitions to more sustainable agriculture and food systems. This chapter discusses the pivotal role that trees play in building and maintaining the soil health and functional resilience that are required for the ecological intensification of agriculture. It summarizes the current knowledge about functions and impacts of trees on soil health, and highlights the tree/soil biodiversity interactions that drive these functions. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookTracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators 2025 2025The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the 2030 Agenda is now more crucial than ever, as the target date draws near and many goals are still far from being achieved. Countries across the globe are grappling with an array of complex and interconnected challenges, including ongoing conflicts, health crises, biodiversity loss, the escalating impacts of climate change, and political and economic tensions. FAO is the custodian agency for 22 SDG indicators spanning Goals 2, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15. Among its key responsibilities as a custodian agency is to curate the indicator methodologies, collect, harmonize and compile data from countries, as well as disseminate and analyse data at global level. This report provides an analysis of regional and global figures and trends for the 22 SDG indicators under FAO's responsibility, thus fulfilling one of FAO’s key roles as custodian agency. The world is at a moderate distance from achieving roughly half of the food and agriculture-related SDG indicators under FAO custodianship; one-quarter of the indicators are close to being achieved, whereas another quarter remains far or very far from being achieved. Meanwhile, progress since 2015 has deteriorated on over three-fifths of the indicators; one indicator has stagnated; whereas only the remaining one-third of indicators have registered an improvement or slight improvement.
