    The Government of Namibia is seeking to increase and diversify crop production in order to generate income and increase food security in the country, among other things. In this context, the Government and private sector date growers have recognized the potential of date production in the country, and are working on the establishment of date palm plantations and the promotion of a date production industry. In order to implement these programmes successfully, it was necessary to address certain issues, such as a shortage of high-quality date cultivars, a lack of rapid techniques and modern facilities to propagate date palm, and a poor technical base.

    The Date Palm is one of earliest crops planted in the ancient world. It is the main source of livelihood for Egyptian farmers and their families. Besides being a source of food and animal fodder and used in trading, it is also utilised in housing construction, furniture manufacturing, home accessories and other personal needs. Date Palms are considered a national wealth, given their economic, social and nutritional and health benefits. Therefore, they must be maintained, conserved and developed since their cultivation contributes to the national domestic income by more than three billion pounds a year. In an effort to promote Date Palm agriculture and develop a national strategic framework for its expansion in newly reclaimed land, this Atlas is an essential step in the identification and characterization of Date Palm cultivars in Egypt. يعتبر نخيل البلح والتمور من أوائل المحاصيل المنزرعة في العالم القديم. تعتبر شجرة نخيل البلح بالنسبة لأماكن زراعتها في مصر، مصدر الرزق الرئيسي للأسر في هذه البلاد؛ فهي مصدر الطعام لهم ولأنعامهم، وهي مصدر البناء في المسكن وتصنيع أثاثهم ومستلزماتهم المنزلية واحتياجاتهم الحياتية بالإضافة إلى مصدر تجارتهم. تعتبر أشجار نخيل البلح والتمور ثروة قومية اقتصادية واجتماعية وصحية فيجب علينا الحفاظ عليها وصيانتها وتنميتها، حيث تدردخلا قومياً يزيد عن عشرة مليارات من الجنيهات سنوياً. وسعياً للنهوض بزراعة وتطوير نخيل البلح والتمور في إطار الاستراتيجية القومية نحو التوسع في الأراضي الجديدة، يأتي هذا الأطلس كخطوة جوهرية لتعريف وتوصيف أصناف نخيل البلح والتمور في مصر.

    This publication, which was produced within the framework of the Date Production Support Programme in Namibia, updates and complements technical information included in earlier FAO publications: Dates: handling, processing and packaging (1962) and Date production and protection (1982). It should serve as a reference volume for research workers and a source of much more detailed information for extension specialists, date growers and anyone interested in the palm industry. The 12 chapters of the book cover the botanical and systematic description, origin, geographical distribution and nutritional value, economic importance, climatic requirements, orchard management, harvesting, and diseases and pests of date palm.

    The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

    Les mises à jour effectuées pour de nombreux pays ont permis cette année d’estimer la faim dans le monde avec une plus grande précision. En particulier, les nouvelles données disponibles ont permis de revoir toutes les estimations de la sous-alimentation faites pour la Chine depuis 2000, ce qui a entraîné une importante révision à la baisse du nombre de personnes sous-alimentées dans le monde. Néanmoins, cette revision confirme la tendance signalée dans les éditions précédentes, à savoir que le nombre de personnes touchées par la faim dans le monde est en lente augmentation depuis 2014. Le rapport montre également que le fardeau de la malnutrition sous toutes ses formes reste un défi. Des progrès ont été réalisés en ce qui concerne le retard de croissance des enfants, l’insuffisance pondérale à la naissance et l’allaitement exclusive au sein, mais à un rythme encore trop lent. Le surpoids chez les enfants ne s’améliore pas et l’obésité chez les adultes est en hausse dans toutes les régions.Le rapport complète l’évaluation de la sécurité alimentaire et de la nutrition par des projections de ce à quoi le monde pourrait ressembler en 2030 si les tendances constatées ces dix dernières années se maintiennent. Ces projections montrent que le monde n’est pas en voie d’atteindre l’objectif «Faim zéro» d’ici à 2030 et, malgré certains progrès, la plupart des indicateurs ne se rapprochent pas non plus des cibles mondiales fixées en matière de nutrition. La situation des groupes les plus vulnérables en matière de sécurité alimentaire et de nutrition risque de se détériorer davantage en raison des conséquences sanitaires et socioéconomiques de la pandémie de covid-19.

    There is increasing attention to the importance of biodiversity for food security and nutrition, especially above-ground biodiversity such as plants and animals. However, less attention is being paid to the biodiversity beneath our feet, soil biodiversity, which drives many processes that produce food or purify soil and water. This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats.
