Book (series)Manual / guideGood beekeeping practices: Practical manual on how to identify and control the main diseases of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) 2020This is a practical tool to help beekeepers, veterinarians and beekeeping advisory services to properly identify main honeybee diseases and to take the most appropriate actions in the apiary to control and/or prevent disease outbreaks. This publication follows the TECA publication Main bee diseases: good beekeeping practices (2018) which provided a more general overview of good beekeeping practices for bee diseases. This manual is a unique publication because, through its presentation of practical information, simple visuals, and understandable content, it helps beekeepers to correctly identify main honeybee diseases in a timely manner. More specifically, the manual creatively illustrates actions which facilitate the identification of disease symptoms. It also presents a comprehensive list of good beekeeping practices to adopt in the apiary as well as biosafety measures to reduce the risk of the introduction and the spread of main honeybee diseases. The manual’s overall objective is ultimately to support a more sustainable beekeeping sector.

2021Prirucnik “Dobra pcelarska praksa: Glavne bolesti medonosne pcele (Apis mellifera): Kako ih prepoznati, sprijeciti i lijeciti: Prakticni prirucnik" služi kao praktican alat pcelarima, veterinarima i savjetodavnim službama u pcelarstvu za identi#kaciju i kontrolu glavnih bolesti medonosnih pcela u pcelinjaku. Nastavak je prirucnika “Glavne bolesti u pcelarstvu: Dobra pcelarska praksa” izdanog 2018. godine. Eksperimentalni zoopro#lakticki institut Toskane u Laziju (tal. Istitu to Zoopro#lattico Sperimentale del Lazio e della Toscana, IZSLT) “M. No results found.African swine fever (ASF) is one of the most serious transboundary animal diseases because of its high lethality for pigs, its crippling socio-economic consequences and its propensity for rapid and unanticipated international spread.Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) are defined for EMPRES (Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests and Disease) as those diseases that are of significant economic, trade and food security importance for a considerable number of countries, that can easily spread from one country to another and reach epidemic proportions and that require international cooperation for control and management, including exclusion. This manual provides information on the nature of ASF and the principles and strategic options regarding prevention, control and elimination of the disease. It provides guidelines for individual countries threatened by ASF for formulation of overall national policy on control and eradication of a possible incursion of the disease. The manual identifies the personnel, equipment and facilities needed in a national ASF contingency plan. A suggested outline of the format and contents of a national ASF contingency plan is provided; it should be modified to suit the needs and circumstances of individual countries. Consideration was given to the provisions in the OIE International animal health code in the preparation of the manual. It is suggested that this manual should be used together with the FAO Manual on the preparation of national animal disease emergency preparedness plans, published in 1999. -

Book (series)FlagshipThe State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021
Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation. To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world. In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookClimate change and food security: risks and responses 2015
Also available in:
End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition are at the heart of the sustainable development goals. The World has committed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
