Community Forestry: Herders' Decision-Making in Natural Resources Management in Arid and Semi-arid Africa 1990
    Also available in:

In 1986, within its Forestry for Community Development Programme, the FAO Forestry Department published a Forestry Paper entitled Tree Growing by Rural People. It presented various facets of the state of knowledge about tree-growing as it relates to community forestry i.e. forestry designed to benefit the rural tree growers/managers. However, although some of the most interesting future opportunities for community forestry lie in improving management of existing trees rather than in creating new resources, this document covered only partially the topic of tree and woodland management by rural people. It did not fully explore how rural people manage single trees or communal woodlands and how they manage their other resources in relation to trees and woodlands. Further effort was necessary to broaden and deepen the knowledge base on local management issues. In order to improve the success of management projects, more complete data and analysis was also needed on what knowledge rural peop le have already developed and the dynamics of their tree resource management strategies in response to changing policies, pressures and opportunities. Finally, more thorough understanding was to be developed of the results and impacts of various attempts to support rural people in the efforts to manage these resources.

In the lead article, M. Hoskins sets out the actual and potential contributions of forestry to food security, and suggests practical strategies for the incorporation of food security components in forestry devel opment activities.

New Concepts and Approaches to Land Management in the Tropics with Emphasis on Steeplands 1999
    Also available in:

In the tropics most of the steepland areas are settled by small-scale farming families where livelihoods may be endangered by land degradation and associated loss of productivity. This bulletin brings concepts and principles of good land husbandry into focus, as a basis for developing different ways of thinking about safe management of steeplands within the environmental, cultural and economic context of the farm families that inhabit them. The translation of the concepts and principles of good land husbandry into field practice will require practical actions that are well adjusted to the site and farmer-specific conditions where they would be applied.

FAO has been working closely with the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) and other development partners in the fight against poverty in the country. More specifically, FAO has been supporting the Government’s efforts at combating hunger and malnutrition and will continue to provide such assistance with a view to achieving the primary goal of freeing Ethiopia from such food-related problems. FAO’s work is aimed at creating a situation where agriculture significantly contributes to the improveme nt of the livelihood of farmers, in general, and the living conditions of the poorest small holder farmers, women, children, youth and other marginalized segments of the society, in particular. FAO maintains the view that the agriculture sector can and should be used in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner to help improve the life of such vulnerable groups. The value of the present Country Programming Framework (CPF) document, which is coauthored by FAO and the GoE, lies in its role in sharpening FAO’s focus and guiding its efforts for the next four years (2012-2015).
