Synopsis (short abstract) A key element required for sustainable and transformational development in agriculture is ensuring that investments are informed by robust evidence about past and future climate risks. Climate resilience is a fundamental concept of climate risk management. In this context, resilience refers to the ability of an agricultural system to anticipate and prepare for, as well as adapt to, absorb and recover from the impacts of changes in climate and extreme weather. Resilience can be enhanced by implementing short and long-term climate mitigation and adaptation strategies, as well as ensuring transparent and inclusive participation of multiple actors and stakeholders in decision-making and management processes. This manual is intended to be a first reference point to guide climate resilient, technical practices and governance strategies and to inform multi-risk analysis and local level consultations. During project design, the identified practices are matched to context-specific environmental and climatic conditions, considering agricultural, social, and economic assets, while also acknowledging the potential technical, economic barriers and limitations of each measure. While the measures provide a reference point for project development teams, the full integration of resilience measures in investment projects will require further assessment and consultation during project design.

    The Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods matches prioritised forestry initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling with suitable funding streams. It also identifies possible regional and national partners for project development and execution. While the strategy is focused on forest resources management, it also emphasises poverty alleviation and food security in line with FAO’s Strategic Objectives. The strategy also has a gender and youth focus in addition to an emphasis on ecosystem services to support agricultural systems. Overall, the strategy can be thought of as a roadmap to mobilise investment for specific priority initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling of climate resilience actions in the Caribbean forestry sector.

    The global community has committed to responding to climate change while ensuring decent livelihoods and healthy food for everyone, keeping within planetary boundaries. Transforming agrifood systems is essential to meeting these challenges, with climate response being an intrinsic element. The need for more resilient systems that can sustain increasing demands in a setting of tightening constraints is evident. Resilience must be generated across environmental, social and economic domains, all the while maintaining the economic viability of agrifood systems to ensure that transition occurs in a just and fair manner. Climate technologies are a key enabler to support climate action and the sustainable transition of agrifood systems.The report highlights the needs for robust technology assessments to underpin climate technology identification for agrifood systems transformation that addresses all stages of agrifood value chains. This needs to be supported by capacity-building programmes, targeted financing and fed into the ongoing climate policy process. The capacity-building strategy and efforts are to be tied to the technology assessments, and identify suitable and correct skill sets, especially for smallholders and vulnerable segments of the population.

    The negative effect of climate risks on agriculture in the Republic of North Macedonia is increasing The agriculture sector, particularly the small farm sector, is exposed to prolonged heat waves, increasingly severe droughts and floods Less than ten percent of agricultural land is irrigated and, with the exception of the western parts of the country, water deficiencies occur in summer, resulting in significant moisture stress for summer crops A case study on the influence of excessive heat on livestock breeding found that the yearly number of live pigs was 2 14 percent lower per litter when high temperatures were taken into account, while analysis of viticulture showed that both table and wine grapes were vulnerable to increases in temperature.
