Bananas are the world's fourth most important staple food and an important consumption and export item in RLC, a region that is home to six of the world's top ten exporters and three of the world's top producers Banana Fusarium Wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f sp cubense Foc is one of the most destructive banana and plantain diseases worldwide and a serious threat to the RLC region Tropical Race 4 Foc TR 4 has caused severe losses in southeast Asian countries with serious repercussions for smallholders, workers and the banana value chain It is estimated that without consistent and coordinated action between and among countries, this pest could affect more than 1 6 million ha by 2040 The Foc TR 4 can be spread by infested plant materials, spores and soil particles attached to agricultural tools, shoes, vehicles and other means Irrigation and water drainage, particularly flooding, plays a critical role in its spread Controlling its spread requires the strengthening of country prevention and surveillance systems, but also a commitment to international coordination in order to develop and implement collective protection strategies There is therefore a need to i formulate a regional action plan for Foc TR 4 prevention, surveillance and eventual response ii) develop and adopt national action plans for Foc TR 4 response, surveillance and prevention and iii) build capacities to contribute to Foc TR 4 prevention, response and surveillance, as essential elements for ownership and sustainability of all these actions. -

2020Banana is an important crop for food security and ensuring the livelihoods of approximately 400 million people who depend on the crop either as a staple food or source of income, particularly in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Plant pests and diseases can seriously affect agricultural production and livelihood of rural people. Fusarium wilt of banana is one of the key examples of crop devastation by a plant disease. This disease brought the banana export industry almost to a halt in the 20th century when the popular banana variety Gros Michel was devastated in Central America. The sector was saved by the introduction of the Cavendish variety, which is resistant to race 1 of the fungus. However, Cavendish bananas are now succumbing to a new, highly aggressive strain of the Fusarium wilt fungus, Tropical race 4 (TR4). Once established in a banana plantation, the fungus can survive in the soil for decades with its chlamydospores, even without banana plants. Scientific reports indicate the presence of TR4 in numerous countries in Asia (China – mainland and Taiwan Province), India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Oman, and Viet Nam); in Africa (Mozambique), in Australasia (Queensland and Northern Territory of Australia), in Europe (in Turkey and in an indoor Rainforest Biome in UK) and Latin America (Colombia). -

La Estrategia Regional sobre R4T ha sido concebida como un instrumento regional para contribuir a los esfuerzos e iniciativas que se llevan a cabo en la región y tiene como objetivo reforzar la coordinación y focalizar esfuerzos, acciones y buenas prácticas para apoyar la comprensión y reducción del riesgo; fortalecer la gestión de emergencias fitosanitarias en ALC, así como mejorar la resiliencia del sector bananero y agrícola y reducir los daños y pérdidas relacionados con la introducción y propagación del marchitamiento por Fusarium, raza tropical 4. La estrategia está alineada con las prioridades “Marco de Sendai para la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres 2015-2030” (UNISDR, 2015), la “Estrategia Regional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres en el Sector Agrícola y la Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional en América Latina y el Caribe (2018 - 2030)” y las Normas Internacionales de Protección Fitosanitaria de la Convención Internacional de Protección Fitosanitaria (CIPF). Abarca el período 2021-2030 y los países de ALC, con énfasis en aquellos que producen y exportan musáceas, insertándose en las estructuras existentes en las ORPF y ONPF para efectos de su implementación. El plan de acción regional tiene tres componentes destinados a fortalecer la coordinación regional e interinstitucional para mejorar los planes de preparación ante la amenaza del focR4T; mejorar la formación de recursos y fortalecer la capacidad de gestión de emergencias en los países y la región y debe ejecutarse hasta el 2024. La estrategia regional y el plan de acción fueron respaldados por las ORPF y 23 ONPF de ALC durante el proceso de validación y aprobación regional.

No results found.Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated. -

The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction
2019The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.
