Synopsis (short abstract) Inspired by the initiatives taken by FAO and recognizing the need to manage and conserve sharks1) (sharks, rays and skates), the Republic of Korea established its National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA-Sharks) in August, 2011. This NPOA-Sharks aims to set the general direction for the conservation and management of sharks and is subject to review at a regular interval and subsequent amendments.

Australian waters are home to a diverse and unique array of sharks, rays and related species, which are an important part of our aquatic biodiversity Australian governments are committed to the conservation and management of sharks and their long-term sustainable use. Australia’s second National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks 2012 (hereafter referred to as Shark-plan 2) will play a key role in achieving these goals. Shark-plan 2 builds on the lessons learned from Au stralia’s 2004 National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks recognising its achievements and also identifying areas where improvements are still needed.
