No results found.Following the endorsement of the SSF Guidelines by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in June 2014, FAO is now engaging in implementation planning through a participatory process and in accordance with COFI recommendations. COFI proposed the establishment of an SSF Guidelines Global Assistance Programme (GAP) and an outline of this GAP was presented to COFI The workshop was an important step in terms of guidance for consolidating the overall implementation approach for the SSF Guidelines. It is evident that there is an overall willingness to work towards a coherent, coordinated implementation by all stakeholders, based on the guiding principles of the SSF Guidelines themselves. It was confirmed that FAO has an important role to play in terms of supporting and facilitating the implementation, but also in providing technical support and project implementation, based on demand. FAO is looking forward to continuing working on the development of the GAP framework, based on commitment and professionalism and in close collaboration with partners and stakeholders. -
Book (stand-alone)GuidelineGlobal Strategic Framework in support of the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries 2020FAO is supporting the Global Strategic Framework (SSF-GSF) in support of the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The SSF-GSF is a partnership mechanism giving small-scale fishery actors, government representatives and other stakeholders a space to collaborate at a global level. One key objective is to give small-scale fishery actors an opportunity to advise others on how they would like to see the SSF Guidelines put into action. The SSF-GSF has an advisory and facilitative role. Its members can share experiences, mobilize resources together, develop synergies and coordinate efforts to advocate for policies and approaches that favour the implementation of the SSF Guidelines. The work in the SSF-GSF complements the FAO Umbrella Programme for the promotion and application of the SSF Guidelines. The SSF-GSF was developed on recommendation from COFI, and its activities are reported back to COFI.

This document provides a summary of the presentations, discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the Near East and North Africa Regional Consultation Workshop on the Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, on 7–10 December 2015. The report was prepared by the Centre for Marketing Information and Advisory Services for Fishery Products in the Arab Region (INFOSAMAK) with important contributions by Nicole Franz, Lena Westlund, Cherif Toueilib and workshop presenters and participants. The workshop was co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Sultanate of Oman, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the collaboration of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). The presentations given by the speakers are reproduced as submitted, as is the material included in the ann exes.

The eruption of armed conflict in the country has severely affected the availability of, and access to, food, against a backdrop of persisting macroeconomic challenges and frequent episodes of intercommunal violence. The food security situation has dramatically worsened since the start of the conflict, with about 19.9 million people estimated to require emergency food and livelihood assistance during the June–September lean season. -

No results found.With the advances in information technology, it is becoming possible to create a global database of fishing effort by gear type with an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. Such a database has the potential to assist with fisheries management and research around the globe. When initiating this publication, FAO intended to present this potential by reviewing AIS-based data in context of global and regional knowledge on fisheries, and to communicate the main findings as well as strengths and limitations of these data and current processing methodology. The aim of this document, hereafter referred to as the Atlas, is to enable stakeholders to understand the opportunity and challenges of mapping and analysing fishing activity with AIS data. For each FAO Area, based on AIS data, this Atlas presents the number and percentage of vessels broadcasting AIS, the spatial patterns of presence and intensity of fishing activity, and an analysis by gear type. For these data, the Atlas includes detailed methods, case studies, and comparisons with outside data. These comparisons, explanatory text, and caveats are presented with the goal of helping member countries understand how this new dataset can be applied. To ensure the accuracy of the conclusions, over 50 fishery experts from around the world reviewed and assessed the maps, charts, and supporting text produced by the authors and editorial team. -
