    FAO technically contributed to the updated IDF Guide on Animal Welfare which aims to promote the implementation of good animal welfare practices in dairy production at global scale and refers to key standards (OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code, and ISO Technical Specification 34700 :2016). This guide provides recommendations on: stockmanship, feed and water, physical environment, husbandry practices and health management. To assess the level of welfare for the animals in dairy production systems, example animal welfare outcome measures are proposed.

    Animal welfare is coming to be recognized as highly relevant to success in international development. It is integral to programmes to improve animal health, to develop livestock production, to respond to natural disasters where animals are involved, and to improve the fit between the genetic constitution of animals and the environments in which they are kept. Aware of the above, FAO has decided to give more explicit and strategic attention to animal welfare and to guide its activities, it h as convened an Expert Meeting to provide specific advice on ‘Capacity building to implement good animal welfare practices’. The strenuous and collaborative work of the experts, together with resource persons from the main relevant institution involved in animal welfare and FAO staff, resulted in this report.

    Animal welfare is inextricably linked to animal health, human health and ethical concerns. This publication reviews the legislative framework for animal welfare, providing options for policy-makers and legal drafters. The text is set against the backdrop of developments in animal welfare science and growing international consens us on the importance of animal welfare.
