    The evaluation assessed the three projects as a thematic cluster, focusing on outcome level results and the most strategic outputs. It analysed the work and assessed the overall contribution by the programme in Afghanistan by emphasizing the intended and unintended results. The evaluation was carried out between September and December 2015, with field mission to Afghanistan from the end of September to the middle of October 2015. The evaluation had contacted stakeholders, including target groups , at central level (ministries and directorates), provincial level (two provinces) and district level (three districts). In addition to contacting project staff, and staff of the FAO Representation in Afghanistan, the mission contacted one of the LTOs based in Bangkok.

    Despite years of progress and global commitments, gender disparities and discrimination in food security persist around the world, particularly affecting women and girls in vulnerable situations. To address these issues, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) included the development of a set of Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition in its 2020–2023 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW). The Guidelines, which were prepared under this project, aimed to (i) support CFS Member States, development partners and other stakeholders to advance the rights of women and girls, as well as gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (GEWGE) in their efforts to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and (ii) to provide guidance to countries as they work to contribute to the achievement of CFS’s vision and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality).

    The Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the Context of Food Security and Nutrition (VG-GEWGE) are a unique opportunity to be seized. The guidelines are the first inter-governmental and multistakeholder negotiated policy instrument aligning the objectives and agendas of food security and nutrition with gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment. Negotiated by 130+ countries, the VG-GEWGE represent a landmark achievement in which Committee on World Food Security (CFS) Members commit to tackle gender inequalities for enhanced food security and nutrition. They provide an important normative umbrella and entry point for the development of policies and programmes at country level addressing the root causes of gender-based discrimination, including rigid social norms. FAO actively participated in the development, consultation and negotiation process of the VG-GEWGE. The implementation of the guidelines is voluntary by definition and depends on political will and targeted investment of time and human resources. Through the Commit to Grow Equality initiative, FAO has stated its support to the uptake and dissemination of the VG-GEWGE. A testament to its engagement, in January 2025, FAO launched a multi-year programme to promote the uptake of the VG-GEWGE with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Additional programme activities are funded by Global Affairs Canada, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Government of France.

    At request of the government, a joint FAO/WFP rapid Food Security Assessment Mission (rFSA) visited DPRK from 29 March to 12 April 2019. The overall objective of the joint FAO/WFP mission was to conduct an independent assessment of the 2018 production shortfall and the food security situation in the country. Provision of accurate, timely and credible information through this exercise is critical to inform appropriate interventions by the government, the international community, and others to mitigate the impact of the reported drops in harvest output.

    Status of the World's Soil Resources: Main Report 2015

    The SWSR is a reference document on the status of global soil resources that provides regional assessments of soil change. The information is based on peer-reviewed scientific literature, complemented with expert knowledge and project outputs. It provides a description and a ranking of ten major soil threats that endanger ecosystem functions, goods and services globally and in each region separately. Additionally, it describes direct and indirect pressures on soils and ways and means to combat s oil degradation. The report contains a Synthesis report for policy makers that summarizes its findings, conclusions and recommendations.
