    The Third Meeting of Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs) was held at FAO Headquarters, Rome, on 3 and 4 March 2003. The Meeting reviewed the decisions of the Twenty-Fifth Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) of relevance to Regional Fishery Bodies and FAO Fisheries Circular No.985 containing summary information about RFBs. The Meeting discussed external factors affecting the management of fisheries, the status of partnerships between RFBs and FAO to develop the Fisheries Resources Monitorin g System (FIRMS), implications for RFBs from the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), approaches to incorporate ecosystem considerations into fisheries management by RFBs, relations between RFBs and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and private sector involvement in the work of RFBs. The Meeting reached a number of conclusions regarding matters meriting the attention of RFBs, governments and FAO.

    Thirty-one regional fishery bodies (RFBs) participated in the Eighth Meeting of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats’ Network (RSN-8). The meeting brought together RFBs with diverse mandates from all geographic regions, including FAO and non-FAO regional fishery bodies, marine and inland fishery advisory and management bodies, the UNDOALOS and other invited organizations. The meeting allowed participants to exchange views and discuss both global fisheries management and development issues in aquaculture, as these related to regional and global processes of particular relevance to RFBs. In addition, RSN-8 provided the opportunity to discuss the development and strengthening of the RSN, as well as a space for reflection on the outcomes of COFI 34 and their implications for regional fishery bodies. The meeting had a high level of participation, which underlined the role of the network as a unique forum in which to foster cooperation, facilitate discussion and share experiences.

    The Ad Hoc Meeting with Intergovernmental Organizations on Work Programmes Related to Subsidies in Fisheries took place at FAO Headquarters for one and a half days starting on 21 May 2001 as a follow up to a recommendation made at the twenty-fourth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI). Representatives from the FAO, UNEP, WTO, OECD and SADC Secretariats attended the Meeting. The Agenda of the meeting included two main issues: (i) presentation and discussion of work programmes on subsi dies in fisheries by participating organizations; and (ii) challenges and possible way forward/issues for the future was adopted. While noting that collaboration amongst the agencies concerned has been going on for some time, the meeting identified a number of additional opportunities for collaboration. The meeting also identified actions for intergovernmental organizations and governments respectively.
