    Social protection is the set of policies and programmes aimed at preventing or protecting all people against poverty, vulnerability, and social exclusion throughout their lifecycles, particularly the most vulnerable groups. This poster will serve to demonstrate the efforts - and advancements made - in reducing rural poverty and increasing resilience through FAO strategic programmes, such as SP3 and SP5 in recent years. It aims to provide to donors, partners, and policy-makers with the information they need to gain awareness of the impacts of social protection initiatives, and to invest in social protection as a valid pathway out of poverty and hunger. The expected results of this product is an increase awareness of the benefits of social protection initiatives, an increase in visibility of countries' progress in areas pertaining to food insecurity and nutrition and act as springboard to more funding opportunities. This poster will hopefully be part of a series of posters put on display during the FAO Council following a side event in the Sheikh Zayed Centre on 4 June, 2018 called "Scaling-up Social Protection: Achieving Rural Development and Resilience for All FAO Council Side Event".

    Improving Food Security and Reducing Rural Poverty in Timor-Leste - GCP/TIM/008/EC 2020

    Around 36 percent of the population of Timor-Leste is chronically food insecure, while the country faces high levels of exposure to disasters such as droughts, floods, storms, pests, soil erosion and forest fires. Given the lack of technical expertise in Timor-Leste’s public and private sectors in terms of applied research in sustainable agriculture and natural resources management, and with vulnerable rural communities becoming increasingly affected by natural hazards, there was a need to provide farmers with the skills and support needed to improve household and national food security and reduce rural poverty. In response, the project aimed to support the Government of Timor-Leste, in particular the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, in building back livelihoods and income sources, while mitigating the further deterioration of the nutritional status of El Niño-affected families and most vulnerable households. The anticipated outcome was enhanced livelihood resilience for vulnerable farm families in drought-prone areas of the country through the integration of disaster risk management, early warning and the promotion of Climate-Smart Agriculture technologies and practices.

    This scale-up note aims to raise awareness of the achievements of the FAO's partnership with the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), while providing a concrete example of the Community-Based Field Placement Programme implemented jointly with RUFORUM in 2018 in four African countries ( Benin, Uganda, Kenya and Lesotho). This programme helped to strengthen knowledge exchanges between rural communities and academia on innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture and rural poverty reduction and to develop capacities of the youth.

    The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.

    Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.

    The Land Cover Atlas of Pakistan: The Balochistan Province provides a comprehensive description of the biotic and abiotic resources of the province and includes numerous categories of cultivated land; natural vegetation and non-vegetated areas including bare and rocky areas, and areas of human settlement. The LCCS approach also captures the physiographic characteristics of the region. The atlas is illustrated at a district and agency level, providing land cover information in aggregated a nd cartographic form as well as tabular statistics per class per district and agency for the province of Balochistan.
