Synopsis (short abstract) These maps have been prepared on the basis of data in the reports listed in the bibliography of this paper. The work makes no claim to have covered all the available literature and I apologize in advance to any authors whom I may have unwittingly omitted. The quality of the data base was variable, necessitating much interpretation on my part in preparing the maps, and I claim full responsibility for any errors which may appear. The preparation of a detailed Atlas of th e region's resources is a long-range, team effort. So this is by way of a preliminary, and is meant to summarize present knowledge, provoke constructive criticism and be improved over time by the scientists concerned. This work was made possible by more than ten years of sustained efforts on the part of my predecessors in the major laboratories of the region. I feel justice has been done to them in the bibliography but I would also like to thank all those in the CECAF working parties whose sometimes anonymous contribution helped to make this Atlas.

    A Workshop to plan the 1999 R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys in the northern CECAF area and the standardization of acoustic surveys in the region was held in Casablanca, Morocco from 18 to 22 October 1999. This Workshop was a follow-up to the Workshop "A review of the surveys off Northwest Africa in the 1990s" held in Bergen in 1998 (FAO, 1998). The countries represented were the Gambia, Mauritania, Morocco and Senegal as well as Norway, Russia and FAO. The purpose of the Workshop was to plan the 1999 acoustic survey with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN off Northwest Africa in November-December 1999 and to discuss the standardization of acoustic surveys in the Northern CECAF area as well as following-up on other recommendations from the meeting in Bergen in 1998. The Workshop stressed the usefulness of the results from the DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys and strongly recommended that the surveys be continued. The Workshop considered that the use of the results for stock assessment could st ill be increased at a regional level and therefore recommended to establish a Working Group on assessment of small pelagic resources in the same region as covered by the DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys. The Working Group on Guidelines provided a first draft of the Guidelines for acoustic surveys in Northwest Africa. It was recommended that the Working Group should meet again before the next acoustic survey in the year 2000.

    This is one of a series of reports prepared during the course of the FAO/UNDP project identified on the title page. The conclusions and recommendations given in the report are those considered appropriate at the time of its preparation.     Report of the Special Working Group on Cephalopod stocks in the Northern Region of CECAF 1982

    In accordance with the recommendation of the Seventh Session of the Fisheries Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) an ad hoc Working Group met under the sponsorship of the Inter-regional Fisheries Development and Management Programme INT/79/019 CE1 to examine the state of cephalopod stocks of the Northern Region of CECAF. The meeting was held from 27 to 30 January 1982 at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, at the oceanography laboratory of the Spanish Oceanography Ins titute. The Working Group consisted of researchers from Spain, Morocco, Senegal, the Inter-regional Fisheries Development and Management Programme (INT/79/019 CE), FAO Headquarters in Rome, and one observer from Guinea (see Appendix 1). Mr Pereiro welcomed the participants and was then appointed Chairman of the Working Group. The Provisional Agenda was completed and adopted (Appendix 2). Messrs Fonteneau, Roest and Garcia were appointed as Rapporteurs.
