Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetBrochureWhat are vulnerable marine ecosystems? 2017
Also available in:
No results found. The importance of avoiding significant adverse impacts on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems is highlighted in international fora. Sponges are identified as possible indicator species for the presence of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems. This leaflet provides concice information of what VMEs are, explaining key concepts and definitions, including for Significant Adverse Impacts. It also provides examples of species groups, communities and habitat forming species that may contribute to the forming of VMEs in the North Atlantic. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical reportReport of the FAO Workshop on the management of Deep-sea fisheries and vulnerable Marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, Rome, Italy, 18-20 July 2016 2016

No results found. The FAO Workshop on the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries and Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the Mediterranean took place from 18 to 20 July 2016 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. The workshop was organized in close collaboration with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). The meeting addressed issues relating to the definition and management of deep-sea fisheries and vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) in the Mediterranean, within the framework of the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (FAO, adopted in 2008; FAO Deep-sea Fisheries Guidelines). The workshop characterized deep-sea fisheries in the Mediterranean, reviewed the current GFCM management measures specific to deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity protection (i.e. the establishment of fisheries restricted areas), and addressed specific issues related to VMEs (such as the use of VME indicator species lists and encounter protocols). The aim of the worksho p was to provide inputs to ongoing discussions within GFCM about required management measures to sustainably harvest deep-sea fish stocks and protect fragile habitats. -
Book (series)Technical reportReport of the FAO Regional Workshop on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the North Pacific Ocean 2016
Also available in:
No results found. The Regional Workshop on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) in the North Pacific Ocean took place in Tokyo, Japan, on 11-13 March 2014. The workshop aimed to raise awareness and build capacity on VMEs and associated management issues in the North Pacific Ocean region. The Workshop discussed the VME concept within the framework of the FAO International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-Sea Fisheries in the High Seas, and looked at examples of different methodologies and options for identifyi ng and managing VMEs, and how these processes can be facilitated. The global VME database being developed and managed by FAO was presented, including how it can support the processes for identifying and managing VMEs in the North Pacific Ocean region. The workshop also identified relevant existing sources of information on deep-sea fisheries and benthic ecosystems. Finally, future requirements and support mechanisms for the VME process were discussed in relation to the upcoming FAO Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Deep-sea Project, which could assist with the VME process by working with States and other stakeholders and projects.

Book (stand-alone)Technical bookIPOA - International Plan of Action for reducing incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries. International Plan of Action for the conservation and management of sharks. International Plan of Action for the management of fishing capacity. 1999The IPOA-SEABIRDS is a voluntary instrument that applies to all States whose fishermen engage in longline fisheries. The text sets out a set of activities which implementing States are expected to carry out, including an assessment of whether a problem exists with respect to the incidental catch of seabirds in its longline fishery, adopting a National Plan of Action for reducing the incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries (NPOA-SEABIRDS) as well as procedures for national reviews and reporting requirements. The calendar years by when these actions preferably should have been taken, are indicated . The IPOA-SEABIRDS also provides a summary description of appropriate mitigation measures which States that determine that they have a problem with the incidental catch of seabirds in their longline fisheries, should consider for inclusion in the NPOA-SEABIRDS. The mitigation measures described are either already used or in an early stage of development. References to appropriate literature are provided. The IPOA-SHARKS is a voluntary instrument that applies to all States whose fishermen engage in shark fisheries. The text sets out a set of activities which implementing States are expected to carry out, including an assessment of whether a problem exists with respect to sharks, adopting a National Plan of Action for the conservation and management of sharks (NPOA-SHARKS), as well as procedures for national reviews and reporting requirements. The calendar years by whe n these actions preferably should have been taken, are indicated. The IPOA-CAPACITY is a voluntary instrument that applies to all States whose fishermen engage in capture fisheries. The first part of the text describes the nature and scope of the International Plan of Action, the underlining principles and defines the objective of the IPOA. The remainder of the text describes urgent actions and identifies mechanisms to promote implementation. The urgent actions include assessment and monitori ng of fishing capacity and the preparation and implementation of national plans. The text on mechanisms to promote implementation describes scientific and technical co-operation, national and international reporting, and, the role of FAO. The calendar years by when recommended actions should be completed, have been identified.
