Synopsis (short abstract) This evaluation assessed the strategic relevance and contribution of FAO in the Pacific region in responding to national/subregional needs and challenges within areas of FAO’s mandate. It covered the period from January 2018 to December 2021, aligning with the start date of the current Country Programming Framework. The evaluation identified lessons learned and recommendations to inform the planning of FAO’s future engagement in the subregion. The evaluation found that FAO’s presence in the Pacific is of strategic importance due to its global technical expertise and comparative advantage particularly in food system development. Nevertheless, the inadequate/understaffed human resources in the subregional office and its thinly spread portfolio limit FAO’s impactful contribution to the subregion’s development process.

The FAO Country Programming Framework (CPF) for the Pacific Sub-Region is a five year strategic program framework covering the period 2013-2017. It details outcomes and outputs in four priority result areas to which FAO assistance will be focused to address the development challenges and national priorities in thirteen Pacific Island Countries and one Territory, namely Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Sol omon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

This publication provides a summary of the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) activities and accomplishments in the Pacific Islands region between 2018 and 2022. FAO's Pacific Multicountry Programming Framework 2018-2022 has guided the work in the region through three key outputs aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and food security while aligning with the UN's sustainable development agenda. Countries’ efforts have included promoting local food production, climate and disaster resilience, healthy diets, and gender equity in the agriculture sector. Results were also achieved by improving coastal fisheries, creating business and marketing opportunities for small-scale farmers, and strengthening national capacities for data collection and analysis. This publication serves as a reflection of past achievements and a call for continued collaboration in the years to come.
