Synopsis (short abstract) As part of the global Food Systems Summit process, countries and stakeholders across the Mediterranean convened several Summit Dialogues, which allowed to reflect on the Summit’s objectives, explore the challenges faced in Mediterranean food systems, and exchange about strategic pathways to enable a sustainable transition. Building on this momentum, an analytical review of the outcomes of part of these dialogues was performed, in order to take stock of common challenges, priorities, and opportunities, and to provide support to countries and stakeholders across the Mediterranean region in further developing and implementing pathways towards sustainable food systems. The stocktake presents a set of thematic areas common to most countries in the region (“what to transform”), as well as a number of potential means of implementation (“how to transform”) that were found to be instrumental to generate transformative change, and have the potential to drive regional collaboration for accelerating the shift towards more sustainable food systems. To keep the momentum created by the Summit and the related national processes, possible next steps are proposed to leverage the transformative power of food systems, including the finalization and implementation of national pathways, the promotion of inclusive governance structures, and the development of cross-national and regional collaborations. In this setting, FAO, CIHEAM and UfM launched an initiative to engage with countries and stakeholders in the Mediterranean, providing a forum for dialogue and multi-stakeholder exchange, dedicated support for the co-creation of flagship projects and investment proposals, opportunities for regional cooperation on data sharing, science diplomacy and innovation.

    This is an executive brief that was developed based on the outcomes of the two SFS-MED Dialogues held in April and June 2021 in the framework of the preparatory process of the UN Food Systems Summit. This document includes key messages and highlights of the two virtual meetings, and its first version was shared with Member State Dialogues Convenors from Mediterranean countries to support the preparation of their participation and their statements in the the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit event in September 2021. This revised version of the document is intended to replace the previous and will also be shared with the participants in the two SFS-MED Dialogues.

    Blue Transformation: strategies and actions for more sustainable agrifood systems in the Mediterranean

    During this webinar, organized by the SFS-MED Platform and held on 21 March 2024, stakeholders from across the Mediterranean shared knowledge and concrete experiences about the role of policymaking, research, capacity building, technology and finance in accompanying the Blue Transformation in the Mediterranean region.Panelists and speakers highlighted that the Mediterranean fisheries and aquaculture sectors are crucial for the region's aquatic food systems, supporting food security, enhancing livelihoods and protecting heritage. To this effect, the Blue Transformation outlines a vision to expand aquatic food systems and increase their contribution to nutritious and affordable healthy diets for the most vulnerable, while fostering equitable growth, especially for those communities that depend on fisheries and aquaculture.The discussion was instrumental in demonstrating that concerted efforts in investments, governance, technological innovation, education and knowledge exchange are needed to address a series of intricate challenges and leverage promising opportunities to propel the sustainable growth of fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean.Multistakeholder and community-driven approaches, as well as an enhanced regional cooperation are essential to integrate agrifood and the blue sectors, advancing towards holistic regional development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
