Synopsis (short abstract) This project fact sheet summarizes the key aspects of this project Mitigating impacts of drought on agriculture livelihoods and food security, objective, budget, geographical scope, people assisted, assistance modalities, crosscutting issues and SDGs contribution. The key objective of this project is to protect the agriculture livelihoods of vulnerable marginal farming households from the adverse impacts of the ongoing drought, COVID-19, worsening of existing food crisis, and other recent shocks in Afghanistan; by providing time-critical and season-sensitive emergency assistance in the form of quality agriculture inputs, related technical training, and awareness building on COVID-19 safety measures to adopt during farm level practices and market participation.

    This project fact sheet summarizes the key aspects of this project (Curbing the potential impacts of La Niña induced dry conditions/drought in Afghanistan), objective, budget, geographical scope, people assisted, assistance modalities, crosscutting issues and SDGs contribution. The key objective of this project is to mitigate the adverse impacts on the most vulnerable marginal smallholder farming demographic groups arising due to the La Niña-induced drought in the rainfed cultivation areas of Samangan Province in Afghanistan. Selected beneficiaries will benefit from a number of emergency interventions such as winter wheat crop and alternate crops (legume and oilseed) production inputs, coupled with technical training, Cash-for-Work or unconditional cash transfers; livestock protection packages including animal healthcare with technical training. Each intervention includes sensitization and awareness building on COVID-19 safety measures in their respective environments. Furthermore, the institutional capacities of governmental departments of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock departments will be strengthened on early warning early action (EWEA) protocols in the agriculture sector.

    This project fact sheet summarizes the key aspects of this project (Time-critical emergency agriculture inputs assistance to marginal and food insecure farming households to mitigate impacts of COVID-19 and ongoing food crisis), objective, budget, geographical scope, people assisted, assistance modalities, crosscutting issues and SDGs contribution. The key objective of this project is to protect the agricuture-based livelihoods of the most vulnerable marginal farming households from the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 shock and the worsening of the existing food crisis. This time-critical and season-sensitive assistance is provided in 15 provinces in the form of quality agriculture inputs, such as certified wheat seeds and fertilizers, accompanied by technical training on optimized cultivation techniques, climate-smart agriculture and natural pest management, as well as sensitization and awareness building on COVID-19 safety measures to be adopted throughout farm level practices and in local market participation.
