Consolidating School Feeding Programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean - GCP/RLA/223/BRA 2024

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 interrupted the years of international cooperation that sought to achieve food security in Latin America and the Caribbean. Due to the emergency, economic changes occurred in the involvement of institutions in developing School Feeding Programmes (SFPs), food delivery and creating safe classrooms. The project built upon the Government of Brazil’s technical cooperation in the region, supporting the implementation of programmes and public policies to ensure adequate and healthy food for students and their families. It also promoted local economic development through direct purchases from family farmers. This South-South Cooperation in capacity development and gender equality led to a school feeding network in the region. This network involves 26 countries engaging in activities and dialogue on the subject and has contributed to reducing poverty and malnutrition.

Developing Capacities in Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS) - GCP/GLO/017/EC 2025
    Also available in:

Global agricultural output will need to increase significantly by 2050 to feed a projected global population of about 10 billion. Achieving this within a rapidly changing demographic, socioeconomic, environmental and climate context requires a climate-relevant, productive and sustainable transformation of agrifood systems. However, weak capacity to innovate in many countries is a real obstacle to this transformation. The Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) was launched in 2012 to tackle the constraint of weak capacity for agricultural innovation in low- and middle-income countries in the tropics. To address this, TAP developed a common framework (CF) on capacity development for agricultural innovation systems and several tools, methodologies and guidelines for implementation at country level. From 2015 to 2019, the CF was piloted successfully in eight countries through a project funded by the European Commission. The current project built on the previous project with the aim of scaling up TAP and strengthening AIS that are inclusive, climate-responsive and capable of addressing systemic constraints in agriculture.

The agricultural and rural sectors, including livestock, forestry and fisheries, contribute roughly 20 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. These sectors have also been recognized for their potential to boost the country’s economic growth. Despite their importance, there are significant challenges to the expansion of the sectors, such as the country’s mountainous terrain, which means that arable land is limited; unfavourable natural and climatic conditions that affect production; hundreds of years of intensive farming practices that have led to the deterioration of land and soil; a lack of necessary technical equipment; and low mechanization levels. Because of these issues, the country cannot generate a food supply large enough to feed its population.
