    This paper analyses how the relationship between decent rural employment and agricultural productivity vary across production systems. The focus is on sub-Saharan Africa, taking Ethiopia and Tanzania as case studies. A latent class stochastic frontier approach is applied to identify different production systems and technologies for a sample of farms in the two countries. Subsequently, we estimate the efficiency of production for these systems and investigate in how far decent rural employment indicators explain different levels of efficiencies across different latent classes.

    Africa may not reach its transformation goals, as defined in Agenda 2063, without fully harnessing the demographic dividend through investments in youth. While youth currently constitutes approximately 40 percent of the working age population, over 60 percent are unemployed. Although Africa has policies and programmes to tackle unemployment among rural youth, the different policies at both continental and national levels do not adequately address the challenges in a holistic and coherent manner. Rural youth need customized training models and curricula, given that most of them have not had the opportunity to obtain quality education and training. Policy interventions are also required to create opportunities for them. Against this background, the project aimed to create job opportunities for rural youth in agricultural value chains, and to support and facilitate preferential entry and participation for young women and men in gainful and attractive agribusiness opportunities. The project focused on four countries: Benin, Cameroon, Malawi and Niger.

    Agricultural labour productivity and decent employment are interlinked. Data show that in countries with higher agricultural productivity, the agricultural workforce faces a lower probability to be unemployed, poor or in vulnerable employment. This indicates that decent work gaps in agriculture can be addressed by increasing labour productivity. To do so, FAO works to improve the skills of the agricultural workforce through trainings and education, with particular emphasis on youth, helping them adapt to ongoing and future labour market demands. This enhances the ability of rural dweller to engage in high quality jobs and increases their mobility within the agricultural sector and towards agriculture-related activities. Altogether, this will foster inclusive rural development.

    Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction

    The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.

    Tracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators 2025 2025
    The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the 2030 Agenda is now more crucial than ever, as the target date draws near and many goals are still far from being achieved. Countries across the globe are grappling with an array of complex and interconnected challenges, including ongoing conflicts, health crises, biodiversity loss, the escalating impacts of climate change, and political and economic tensions. FAO is the custodian agency for 22 SDG indicators spanning Goals 2, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15. Among its key responsibilities as a custodian agency is to curate the indicator methodologies, collect, harmonize and compile data from countries, as well as disseminate and analyse data at global level. This report provides an analysis of regional and global figures and trends for the 22 SDG indicators under FAO's responsibility, thus fulfilling one of FAO’s key roles as custodian agency. The world is at a moderate distance from achieving roughly half of the food and agriculture-related SDG indicators under FAO custodianship; one-quarter of the indicators are close to being achieved, whereas another quarter remains far or very far from being achieved. Meanwhile, progress since 2015 has deteriorated on over three-fifths of the indicators; one indicator has stagnated; whereas only the remaining one-third of indicators have registered an improvement or slight improvement.

    Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.
