Synopsis (short abstract) FAO’s Blue Hope Project approach seeks to address these challenges by developing sustainable and inclusive multi-sectoral investment plans that facilitate the transition of small-scale fishing communities to blue growth. To this end, the blue growth investment plans are being developed by leveraging and integrating existing FAO tools and international instruments, including the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) provides the foundation for capture fisheries sustainability, the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA) is an approach to develop aquaculture while minimizing environmental degradation, FAO’s value chain methodologies ensure that value chain development potential is assessed in gender-sensitive ways and so on.

But as the population grows, the demand for fish increases, and our natural resources are increasingly stressed. Sustainable management and development is crucial to preserving these resources for future generations. Like the Green Economy principles that preceded it, FAO’s Blue Growth Initiative emphasizes the three pillars of sustainable development – social, economic, and environmental– so that fisheries and aquaculture contribute to the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Blue Growth Initiative is a strategic approach to improving the use of aquatic resources resulting in better social, economic and environmental outcomes.

    World Aquaculture Performance Indicators (WAPI) is an endeavour initiated by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department to develop user-friendly tools for compiling, generating and providing easy access to quantitative information on aquaculture sector performance at the national, regional and global levels. This brochure introduces the rationale and main activities under the initiative, summarizes WAPI information and knowledge products as of May 2018, and presents some WAPI background documents and policy briefs to help readers better understand the initiative.
