This chapter aimed to provide an overview (and by no means a complete list) of the processes for determining a sustainable remediation or management strategy for a polluted site and of the technologies that it could employ. The descriptions of the technologies are brief but, for those interested, external resources including regulatory guidance and scholarly documents have been cited.
There is no intention to promote one solution over any other. It is recommended to engage with national regulators and other stakeholders as early as possible in the process of site investigations and development of remediation strategies.
FAO will shortly be publishing the Online Database on Best Management and Remediation Techniques for Polluted Soils, which will provide detailed information about the decision-making processes and each technology.
