Synopsis (short abstract) This technology refers to the grow-out tilapias using modified farming practices in the farmer’s backyard as a means to augment farmer’s income and food requirements. It should be noted that tilapia is widely known and accepted food fish not only in land-locked areas, but also in coastal areas. Tilapia is specifically recommended as a candidate species because tilapias are hardy, fast growing and disease resistant species. They are also prolific and able to breed in captivity. They also feed low in food chain. Therefore an appropriate farmed species in flood and typhoon-prone areas in Bicol.

    The Churia range in Nepal is the youngest mountain system located in the outskirts of the Himalayas and it is of ecological, hydrological and socio economic importance for Nepal, in particular for the Terai region. Activities such as uncontrolled grazing and forest depletion upstream lead to heavy sedimentation of sand, silt and boulders in river beds, causing subsequent erosion of river embankments by fast flows of water downstream. The objectives is to strengthen the Kharare river embankments with live barriers to control soil erosion and to safeguard/reclaim productive lands (paddy).

    This working paper is the update of an earlier cross-country study on household income sources using an expanded harmonized dataset. The analysis presented covers a total of 93 surveys representing 41 countries – nearly double that of the previous study – to depict rural and urban households’ livelihood strategies across different levels of economic development. The findings shed light on the relationship between household livelihood activity portfolios and per capita gross domestic product, confirming a picture of multiple livelihood activities across the rural and urban space, at different levels of development. However, we find an emerging divergence between countries from sub-Saharan Africa and those from the rest of the world regarding employment and income generation.
