Synopsis (short abstract) In Africa, boosting sustainable food value chain development can contribute to enabling smallholders and small service providers to take advantage of burgeoning food economies. There are indeed new opportunities due to the increasing and changing food demand, coming in particular from urban areas. One of the central drivers of growth are food based small and medium sized enterprises ( agrifood SMEs), which can become key protagonists of the transformation of agriculture towards more sustainable food systems. However, these SMEs struggle to take advantage of the increased market opportunities. Among the barriers inherent to agriculture and that hinder investments  such as high risks and weak mitigation strategies, limited availability of collateral, high transaction costs, and lack of business skills among small entrepreneurs  there is also the lack of capacity of financial institutions and private investors to assess profitable business opportunities within agribusiness markets. Against this background, this project aimed to foster Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) aligned investments in agrifood systems in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya and the Niger, to enable more inclusive, efficient and sustainable agrifood systems in these countries, and beyond.

    The project’s overall aim is to contribute to the sustainable achievement of food security among rural Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian hosts, by enhancing their capacity to successfully participate in efficient sustainable Agri-food systems and building their capacities for decent work opportunities as well as advocating for food waste reduction which has a profound effect on sustainbility,food security and rural development through training sessions. As such the project will address the capacity building, assets, financing, and employment needs of the targeted beneficiaries, through a series of activities related to capacity enhancement, asset distribution, access to micro-financing, access to markets, and job creation. The reader of this factsheet will be able to have an overall idea about the project's objectives, impact, activities and outputs in both English and Arabic. يهدف المشروع الى المساهمة في تحقيق الأمن الغذائي بشكل مستدام بين اللاجئين السوريين والمجتمعات الأردنية المضيفة في الريف من خلال تعزيز قدرتهم على المشاركة بنجاح في أنظمة الأغذية الزراعية المستدامة الفعالة وبناء قدراتهم من خلال برنامج تدريبي متكامل لخلق فرص عمل لائقة وكذلك الدعوة إلى الحد من هدر الاغذية والذي له تأثير عميق على الاستدامة والأمن الغذائي والتنمية الريفية. على هذا النحو، سيعالج المشروع احتياجات بناء القدرات والتمويل والتوظيف للمستفيدين، من خلال سلسلة من الأنشطة المتعلقة بتعزيز القدرات وتوزيع الأدوات والوصول إلى التمويل الصغير و إلى الأسواق وخلق فرص العمل. سيتمكن القارئ من تكوين فكرة شاملة عن أهداف المشروع وتأثيره وأنشطته ومخرجاته باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية.

    Nature based solutions (NBS) in agriculture and food systems encompass people centred and regenerative approaches targeted at restoring, sustainably managing and conserving the natural capital needed to buffer food systems and the livelihoods dependent upon them against shocks and crises, while supporting the achievement of sustainable development, climate and biodiversity goals. Considering the potential benefits to be derived from their application, a concerted effort is needed to scale up and optimize the use of NBS, integrating them into wider food system risk management, development and climate action strategies, such as disaster risk reduction, adaptation and mitigation. To support countries in optimizing the use of agricultural NBS, the project supported the development of a multidisciplinary diagnostic, planning and monitoring framework for investments at local and national levels. The tool aims to support countries to conduct better landscape planning and to mainstream issues of natural capital, ecosystem services and biodiversity into planning and investment decision making.
