Synopsis (short abstract) This Sourcebook on livestock data summarizes the activities and outputs of the Livestock in Africa: Improving Data for Better Policies Project. It provides guidance to decision makers responsible to collect and analyze livestock data from differ¬ent perspectives on how to systematically address livestock data-related issues within the context of the national agri-cultural statistical system. In particular, it first develops the skeleton of a sound livestock statistical system, consistent with th e demand of livestock information by stakehold¬ers and the principles of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (World Bank, 2011) , which represents the foundation for producing good livestock data. It then presents a sample of methods and tools and associated examples designed to improve the quantity and quality of livestock data available to decision makers. These tools and methods target household and farm level data for example, trade data and the role of expert in formants to generate statistics are not dealt with in the Sourcebook and to a large extent have been tested in the context of the implementation of Living Standards Measurement Studies and small-scale data collection exercises in Niger, Tanzania and Uganda. They were jointly identified and developed based on dialogue between the Livestock in Africa: Improving Data for Better Policies Project and users and suppliers of livestock data and statistics at country level, including the Ministry respons ible for livestock development, the National Statistical Authority, and other national and pan-African public and private sector data stakeholders. As such, they address data issues which are of broad interest to livestock stakeholders: the 23rd session of the African Commission for Agricultural Statistics (AFCAS, December 2013) recommend¬ed country governments in the continent adopt some of the tools and methods presented in the following chapters to improve the quantity and quality of the live stock information available to decision makers.

International prices of wheat and maize remained relatively stable in November, reflecting good supply conditions, while export quotations of rice strengthened amid increased buying interest and currency movements. In East Africa, prices of cereals in November continued to decline in most countries with the ongoing 2017 harvests and were at levels around or below those a year earlier with a few exceptions. By contrast, in the Sudan, prices surged and reached record highs in some markets, mainly underpinned by the sharp depreciation of the Sudanese Pound in the parallel market. In Central America, prices of white maize eased in November as market flows returned to normal, after disruption caused by severe rains in the previous month. Good domestic availabilities kept prices at levels below those a year earlier.

This module presents a case study of Carbon-Balance Appraisal for an investment project. It is useful for people who wish to improve their skills on how to estimate the climate change mitigation potential of agricultural programmes/projects and how to integrate it in the economic analysis of projects. This case is part of a set of documents aimed at driving project developers in the process of learning and applying the EX-Ante Carbon balance Tool (EX-ACT). Specifically, this case study has been developed as a result of the application of EX-ACT to a FAO/WB Project in Tanzania, which was selected to test the software. The case study consists of a brief description of the project, guidelines for structuring project data, and an appendix with project data.

This compendium is the result of a first-of-its-kind stocktaking exercise looking at FAO activities to address child labour in agriculture in Malawi, Mali, Uganda, the Niger and the United Republic of Tanzania over a decade (2010–2020). It is intended to make a practical contribution to the field of child labour elimination in agriculture, by shedding a light on some of the FAO-supported activities, country processes and practices as well as achievements, and lessons learned. As such, it highlights the general main lessons learned and key messages, outlines and provide details on country processes and related outcomes and achievements on knowledge generation, capacity development, awareness raising, policy advice and promotion of advocacy and partnerships. The contents on these FAO strategies for the elimination of child labour in agriculture are complemented by examples of areas of work such as promoting safe practices and labour-saving technologies and empowering and building the skills of youth aged 15–17 by facilitating school-to-work transition in agriculture.
