Synopsis (short abstract) Fishing with bottom-contact gear in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) occurs on continental shelves, slopes or isolated oceanic topographic structures such as seamounts, ridge systems and banks. These bottom fisheries comprise a small, yet valuable, part of ABNJ activities. FAO estimates that the total global catch in 2014 caught by bottom-contact fishing gear was less than 150 000 tonnes, comprising of more than 50 species in reported catches, and involved at least 11 flag States. R egional fisheries management organizations or arrangements (RFMO/As) and other multi-lateral bodies with a fisheries management mandate are managing these bottom fisheries in the ABNJ. Currently, there are eight of these bodies, three of which were created in the last five years.

    This brochure introduces the Common Oceans ABNJ Program supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with 50 million USD. FAO is the coordinating agency of the Program which started in 2014, working in close collaboration with two other GEF implementing agencies; the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Bank, as well as the Global Ocean Forum (GOF), WWF, Conservation International, and IUCN and other partners. The brochure presents the four projects which constitute th e Program, including a brief summary of both the Program and the individual Projects and their recent progress and achievements achieved so far. The contact details have been updated with the new website address and link to social media where additional information can be found.

    In January and February 2015, the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen conducted a 29-day research cruise to map selected seamounts of the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO) Convention Area. The cruise was a collaboration between SEAFO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and supported by three projects: the EAF-Nansen project, the FAO-Norway Deep Sea fisheries project, and the ABNJ Deep Seas project under the FAO-led Common Oceans programme funded by the Global Environment Facility. This flyer depicts the preliminary results and how these were integrated into the management advice of the regional fishery managment body for the Southeast Atlantic (SEAFO), leading to the confirmation of existing and adoption of revised fisheries management measures aiming to protect certain areas of the ocean from significant adverse impact.
