Fighting child labour in Burkina Faso, Mali and Pakistan

Child labour, including hazardous work, one of the worst forms of child labour, is present in cotton value chains in multiple countries across the globe. Not only does child labour infringe on the rights of a child, but it also perpetuates the cycle of poverty among families and communities. With funding from the European Union, the CLEAR Cotton project “Eliminating child labour and forced labour in the cotton, textile and garment value chains” was launched in 2018 to support the elimination of child labour and forced labour in the cotton, textile and garment value chains in target producing countries. As demonstrated through six human stories, FAO is making a difference in Burkina Faso, Mali and Pakistan, by addressing the linkages between livelihoods improvement and the elimination and prevention of child labour in agriculture.

Setting a vision for youth in the Sahel
    2023

Populations in the G5 Sahel countries are growing rapidly. Given these large cohorts of young populations, over the next five years 11.4 million youth will turn 16 years old, and most will then start to seek jobs in the region. Although the countries are urbanizing, meaning that future economic growth may be faster in industry and services than in agriculture, in the short and medium run the bulk of new jobs are likely to be created in the agriculture sector and its supply chains. For the five countries of the G5 Sahel – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Mali and Niger – this study aims to address the following questions: i) What employment can be created for youth, as agriculture and the agrifood value chains become environmentally sustainable as part of a rural green transition?; and ii) What policies, programmes and investment are needed to create these jobs and ensure that young women and men can access them?

The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.

FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

The findings and conclusions of the conference are expected to assist in the identification of policy measures that address the consequences of structural change in the poultry sector. Three main themes were identified for the conference: (i) sector trends and impacts; (ii) risks and opportunities for poultry production; (iii) poultry as a development tool. For each of the themes, several authors were identified to prepare background and review papers on specific topics. Five poultry sector country studies were commissioned for important poultry producing countries, namely: Brazil, China, Egypt, India, and Thailand. An expert consultation, including key authors, was held 3-4 May 2007 in Rome to further develop the topics and scope of the conference.
