No results found.The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to provide lifesaving assistance to war-affected rural communities in Ukraine to enable them to secure spring and winter harvests and meet their basic needs. In support of FAO’s emergency response, the Government of Belgium, through the FAO Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, contributed USD 900 000 to support over 700 rural famillies in Chernihivska, Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska and Sumska oblasts. FAO provided beneficiary households with soybean seeds to contribute to protecting their livelihoods and enable them to maintain food production. This document provides a brief description of the context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of the affected communities. -

No results found.The war in Ukraine continues to escalate with major impacts on Ukraine’s agriculture sector, which used to feed 400 million people annually across the globe. Frontline territories are rural and agricultural. Rural communities are increasingly impacted by contaminated lands, damaged infrastructure and limited access to basic agricultural supplies, while anticipating the harshest winter since 2022. They urgently need support to maintain local food production and supply. This document provides a summary of the planned response and funding requirements of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations within the framework of the 2024 Emergency Response Plan for Ukraine. -

No results found.Zambia is experiencing a severe El Niño-induced drought that has resulted in reduced agricultural production, water scarcity and crop failure. So far, 1.8 million smallholder farmers have been significantly impacted. To mitigate the negative effects of the drought on food security, nutrition and livelihoods, while strengthening household food production in rural communities, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has received a contribution of USD 400 000 from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities. This support will enable FAO to increase the production capacity of 1 040 drought-affected farming households (6 240 people) by providing agricultural inputs, including maize, soybean, common bean and cowpea seeds, and fertilizers. Additionally, the project will promote irrigated crop production using existing and new irrigation facilities, where possible, and support crop growth in wetlands through solar irrigation, depending on agro‑ecological zones and access to water.
