Synopsis (short abstract) The 2019 TRI Year in Review is detailing progress and stories from the first year implementation of The Restoration Initiative (TRI) programme. With support from the Global Environment Facility, this pathbreaking programme led by IUCN in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is supporting ten Asian and African countries in achieving shared restoration goals. The 2019 TRI Year in Review takes readers on a tour of the eleven projects of TRI, showcasing the diversity of project objectives and geographies that is a key feature of the programme. From work to restore coastal mangroves and degraded rice fields in Guinea-Bissau, to improving the management practices of China’s large and vital network of State Forest Farms, to enhancing the productivity and resilience of degraded agricultural and pasture lands in South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to empowering local communities to conserve and sustainably manage the Tana River Delta in Kenya, readers can see the extent to which restoration is truly a global ambition and enterprise.

    The 2020 TRI Year in Review presents an overview of progress and stories from the second year implementation of The Restoration Initiative (TRI) programme. With support from the Global Environment Facility, this pathbreaking programme led by IUCN in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is supporting ten Asian and African countries in achieving shared restoration goals. While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present unique challenges, TRI partners were able to make progress on many fronts in 2020. Program-supported 2020 work includes an online course on forest landscape restoration (FLR) presented through partnership with Yale University, publication of a new tool assessing threats to biodiversity to better inform restoration and conservation measures, and a new mentorship programme supporting development of restoration-based business and investment proposals. These achievements, as well as stories from the front lines of restoration, are described within.

    Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Forests

    Reducing deforestation and forest degradation and restoring and sustainably managing forests are critical pathways to meet the 2030 global goals. Since 1990, more than 420 million hectares of forest have disappeared. Although deforestation rates have slowed, 10 million hectares of forest are still lost every year. To address such challenges, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland have launched AIM4Forests, a five-year programme that aims to support forest monitoring based on modern monitoring technologies and technical innovation, as well as the use of space data and remote sensing.
