Synopsis (short abstract) أجرت البعثة المشتركة بين منظمة الأغذية والزراعة وبرنامج الأغذية العالمي لتقييم المحاصيل والأمن الغذائي زيارة إلى الجمهورية العربية السورية خلال الفترة ما بين 25 يونيو/حزيران و19 يوليو/تموز 2018 لتقدير إنتاج المحاصيل وتقييم الحالة العامة للأمن الغذائي. وأقام أعضاء الفريق الدولي للبعثة في دمشق لمدة خمسة أيام عند وصوله إلى البلد قبل انتقاله إلى الميدان. وخلال إقامتهم في دمشق، عقد أعضاء البعثة اجتماعات مع مسؤولين في وزارة الزراعة والإصلاح الزراعي وفي عدد من الوزارات المعنية والهيئات الحكومية في الجمهورية العربية السورية. وعقب أسبوعين من العمليات الميدانية لجمع البيانات في ست محافظات، عاد فريق البعثة إلى دمشق ليتم اطلاعه من قبل المسؤولين في وزارة الزراعة والإصلاح الزراعي على البيانات التي جمعوها بشكل مستقل في كافة المحافظات، والأكثر أهمية من المحافظات التي لم يتمكن الفريق الدولي من زيارتها. وأُتْبعت هذه الفعاليات بجولة أخرى من الاجتماعات مع المديريات الفنية الرئيسية التابعة لوزارة الزراعة. وقبل مغادرة البلد، أطْلعت البعثة وزير الزراعة والإصلاح الزراعي على النتائج الرئيسية التي توصلت إليها.

    FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources in 1948. At that time, its major objective was to collect information on available timber supply to satisfy post-war reconstruction demand. Since then, the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) has evolved into a comprehensive evaluation of forest resources and their condition, management and uses, covering all the thematic elements of sustainable forest management. This, the latest of these assessments, examines the status of, and trends in, forest resources over the period 1990–2020, drawing on the efforts of hundreds of experts worldwide. The production of FRA 2020 also involved collaboration among many partner organizations, thereby reducing the reporting burden on countries, increasing synergies among reporting processes, and improving data consistency. The results of FRA 2020 are available in several formats, including this report and an online database containing the original inputs of countries and territories as well as desk studies and regional and global analyses prepared by FAO. I invite you to use these materials to support our common journey towards a more sustainable future with forests.

    As renewed international efforts are needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the livestock sector can contribute its part. An important emitter of greenhouse gas, it also has the potential to significantly reduce its emissions. This report provides a unique global assessment of the magnitude, the sources and pathways of emissions from different livestock production systems and supply chains. Relying on life cycle assessment, statistical analysis and scenario building, it also prov ides estimates of the sector’s mitigation potential and identifies concrete options to reduce emissions. The report is a useful resource for stakeholders from livestock producers to policy-makers, researchers and civil society representatives, which also intends to inform the public debate on the role of livestock supply chains in climate change and possible solutions.
