    This book collects the findings of a group of scientists and economists who have taken stock of climate change impacts on food and agriculture at global and regional levels over the past two decades. The evidence presented describes how global warming will impact where and how food is produced and discusses the significant consequences for food security, health and nutrition, water scarcity and climate adaptation. The book also highlights the implications for global food trade. The evidence pres ented in the book is presented in a way that is widely accessible to policy decision makers and practitioners and makes a distinct contribution towards a greater science-policy interchange. Put together, the different analyses in the book paint a comprehensive perspective linking climate change to food, nutrition, water, and trade along with suggested policy responses.

    As part of its mandate to provide assistance to member countries for the follow-up to the Uruguay Round and future negotiations on agriculture, FAO has pursued a wide range of activities with a view to enhancing the capacity of member countries, particularly developing countries, to analyse the implications of the Uruguay Round Agreements for the agricultural sector, to adjust to the new trading environment and thus take advantage of trading opportunities, and to participate effectively in futur e multilateral trade negotiations.     This work contributes to the empirical debate on the impact of agricultural policies on food and nutrition security (FNS). To this aim, it first summarizes some of the arguments and conceptual issues regarding the relationship between agricultural policies and FNS. The work presents some results providing empirical evidence of a significant impact of agricultural policies on food availability. The paper also shows that governments may be tempted to provide ‘too much of a good thing’, since the h ighest levels of support are associated with lower levels of performances in terms of food availability.
