No results found.Soils provide many critical ecological services, as well as being crucial for achieving food security and nutrition, as 95 percent of our food production is linked directly or indirectly to soils. However, recent assessments have demonstrated the extent to which soils are deteriorating. In fact, about one third of our soils globally are facing moderate to severe degradation, affecting the productivity of the one billion smallholders who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, as well as the commercial farming and forest sectors. In this context, the importance of soil management is underestimated - including management in the field and in data collection and analysis - in the fight for food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and biodiversity conservation. The availability of soil data is highly heterogeneous in different regions, and in many developing countries there is no information about soil status, leading to agricultural practices that are frequently not appropriate for local conditions. Against this background, the project comprised the third phase of a European Union funded FAO project, advocating for enhanced soil governance and the dissemination and adoption of sustainable soil management (SSM) worldwide, as well as the improvement of soil data and information availability. -

No results found.Soils are essential to life on Earth they regulate nutrients, greenhouse gases and water cycles, provide raw materials, host one quarter of terrestrial biodiversity and function as the largest terrestrial carbon pool. Moreover, soils contribute to human development and well being, delivering a range of ecosystem services. As such, soil degradation poses a serious threat to food security and nutrition, as well as climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. Despite their importance, the protection of soils has long been neglected. Soil sustainability is a key factor in making progress towards the SDGs, while the protection and conservation of soil resources remain critical to sustainable development. Importantly, sustainable soil management approaches can contribute to the prevention, minimization and reversal of degradation processes. Established in 2012, the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) acts as a mechanism to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in soil sustainability and enhance synergies across interventions. Capitalizing on the GSP network, this project promoted sustainable soil management around the world through the delivery of normative and technical actions that aim to optimize human land use and management for the long term maintenance of soil properties and functions. -

Soil degradation, particularly on agricultural and pastoral land, is a threat to the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region and presents significant risks to food production. The region's limited land availability further compounds the already challenging situation of stagnant agricultural productivity. Several factors contribute to the degradation of soil, namely salinization, sodification, the depletion of soil organic carbon, loss of vegetation cover, and soil pollution due to the excessive application of fertilizers and pesticides. Given this context, FAO’s Global Soil Partnership (GSP) sought to enhance the understanding of soil conditions in NENA and build the capacities of national experts on sustainable soil management (SSM). The project also aimed to develop collaboration and synergy in efforts between all regional and country-level stakeholders, facilitated by the project’s regional plenaries and action plans. As such, the project directly contributed to the work of the NENA Soil Partnership, which was established in 2012 to enhance collaboration between member countries in the region. Under the framework of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN) and its regional branch in NENA (NENALAB), the project worked to improve the capacity and performance of soil analyses in the laboratories of all participating countries. Key areas of focus included internal and external quality assurance, quality control, equipment use and maintenance, sample collection and analysis, and the interpretation and reporting of laboratory results. By addressing key technical concerns of the agricultural sector, the project provided strong technical capacity-building support to the existing government programmes and initiatives.

The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms
2024Six years from 2030, hunger and food insecurity trends are not yet moving in the right direction to end hunger and food insecurity (SDG Target 2.1) by 2030. The indicators of progress towards global nutrition targets similarly show that the world is not on track to eliminate all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). Billions of people still lack access to nutritious, safe and sufficient food. Nevertheless, progress in many countries provides hope of the possibility of getting back on track towards hunger and malnutrition eradication. Implementing the policies, investments and legislation needed to revert the current trends of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition requires proper financing for food security and nutrition. Despite a broad agreement on the urgent need to increase financing for food security and nutrition, the same cannot be said for a common understanding regarding how this financing should be defined and tracked. The report provides a long-awaited definition of financing for food security and nutrition and guidance for its implementation. There are recommendations regarding the efficient use of innovative financing tools and reforms to the food security and nutrition financing architecture. Establishing a common definition of financing for food security and nutrition, and methods for its tracking, measurement and implementation, is an important first step towards sustainably increasing the financing flows needed to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition, and to ensure access to healthy diets for all, today and tomorrow. -

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
