    At its sixteenth session, the Committee on Fisheries decided to establish a Sub-Committee on Fish Trade to serve as a multilateral framework for consultations on international trade in fishery products. The eleventh session of the Sub-Committee was held in Bremen, Germany, from 2 to 6 June 2008. The Sub-Committee took note of recent developments concerning international trade in fishery products. It also considered specific issues related to international trade and sustainable fisherie s development, including: safety and quality of fishery products; traceability and labelling of fishery products; Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fish Trade; fish trade and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora; harmonization of catch and trade documentation. In its capacity as the International Commodity Body for Fishery Products, the Sub-Committee approved an updated commodity strategy and endorsed two project proposals for funding b y the Common Fund for Commodities.

    The fourth session of the Committee on Fisheries Sub-Committee on Aquaculture was held in Puerto Varas, Chile, from 6 to 10 October 2008 at the kind invitation of the Government of Chile. It was attended by 38 Members of FAO, by representatives from one specialized agency of the United Nations and by observers from six intergovernmental and three international non-governmental organizations. Several working documents, including Technical guidelines on aquaculture certification, Towards better go vernance in aquaculture and Opportunities for addressing the challenges in meeting the rising global demand for food fish from aquaculture, were presented by the Secretariat for information, discussion and decision by the Sub-Committee. The Secretariat also held a special event on the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department’s Special Programme for Aquaculture Development in Africa (SPADA). All technical documents presented and the activities conducted were well received. The Sub-Committee reque sted the Secretariat to ensure the implementation of priority activities during the intersessional period. The Sub-Committee expressed its appreciation to the Government and people of Chile for their hospitality and the excellent facilities provided for the session. The Sub-Committee agreed that its next session should be held in 2010 and appreciated the offer made by the Government of Thailand to host it.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its eleventh session in Marrakech, Morocco, from 1 to 5 December 2008. The session was attended by delegates from 18 Members of the Commission. The session appraised the achievements by its subsidiary bodies, the activities of the regional projects to support GFCM as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). It acknowledged the progress to impr ove the stock assessment process notably through undertaking joint stock assessment of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and small pelagic species and harmonizing protocols to undertake surveys at sea. The Committee took note of progress achieved in the framework of data collection and processing through Task 1 and STATLANT 37A form. It also noted the progress made on issues such as GFCM logbook and promoting activities and knowledge on the ecosystem approach to fisheries, recreational fish eries, gear selectivity and bycatch. SAC further reviewed fishery management proposals emanating from its Sub-Committees and formulated related advice with regard to: i) management of demersal and small pelagic fisheries; ii) implementation of the 40-mm square mesh; iii) establishment of a new fisheries restricted area in the Golf of Lions; iv) establishment of a Regional fleet register. It also suggested to amend some GFCM decisions, gave guidance regarding the activities of the Joint GFCM/ICCAT [International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas] Working Group on Large Pelagic Species and endorsed suggestions concerning the update of the SAC glossary and the priority species list, and identified actions to address the issue of monitoring the fishing capacity. The Committee agreed upon its workplan for 2009.
