Bremen, Alemania, 2-6 de junio de 2008. 2008At its sixteenth session, the Committee on Fisheries decided to establish a Sub-Committee on Fish Trade to serve as a multilateral framework for consultations on international trade in fishery products. The eleventh session of the Sub-Committee was held in Bremen, Germany, from 2 to 6 June 2008. The Sub-Committee took note of recent developments concerning international trade in fishery products. It also considered specific issues related to international trade and sustainable fisherie s development, including: safety and quality of fishery products; traceability and labelling of fishery products; Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fish Trade; fish trade and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora; harmonization of catch and trade documentation. In its capacity as the International Commodity Body for Fishery Products, the Sub-Committee approved an updated commodity strategy and endorsed two project proposals for funding b y the Common Fund for Commodities.

Puerto Varas, Chile, 6-10 de octubre de 2008. 2009The fourth session of the Committee on Fisheries Sub-Committee on Aquaculture was held in Puerto Varas, Chile, from 6 to 10 October 2008 at the kind invitation of the Government of Chile. It was attended by 38 Members of FAO, by representatives from one specialized agency of the United Nations and by observers from six intergovernmental and three international non-governmental organizations. Several working documents, including Technical guidelines on aquaculture certification, Towards better go vernance in aquaculture and Opportunities for addressing the challenges in meeting the rising global demand for food fish from aquaculture, were presented by the Secretariat for information, discussion and decision by the Sub-Committee. The Secretariat also held a special event on the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department’s Special Programme for Aquaculture Development in Africa (SPADA). All technical documents presented and the activities conducted were well received. The Sub-Committee reque sted the Secretariat to ensure the implementation of priority activities during the intersessional period. The Sub-Committee expressed its appreciation to the Government and people of Chile for their hospitality and the excellent facilities provided for the session. The Sub-Committee agreed that its next session should be held in 2010 and appreciated the offer made by the Government of Thailand to host it.

No results found.The sixth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) was held in Tirana, Albania, from 17 to 19 December 2008. The session was attended by delegates from eleven Members of the Commission and by the observer from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Committee reviewed the status and trends of the Mediterranean aquaculture as well as the intersessional activities undertaken also by its Working Groups respect ively on Marketing of Aquaculture (WGMA), on Siting and Carrying Capacity (WGSC), on Aquaculture Sustainability (WGSA), as well as the progress achieved in relation to the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean Countries (SIPAM). The CAQ discussed on the main problems faced by the Mediterranean aquaculture market and agreed on the need to harmonize and to implement the procedures for site selection and site management of Mediterranean aquaculture, for Environmen tal Impact Assessment and Environmental Monitoring Programmes (EMP). The Committee confirmed that the sustainability of aquaculture depends on four key dimensions being the economic, social, environmental and governance dimension. The CAQ noted that identification of sustainable aquaculture indicators and reference points should be understandable for all stakeholders and easily quantifiable. It formulated aquaculture management advice aimed to establish a regional data collection scheme for aqua culture data and information and agreed on the preliminary set of data to be collected. It agreed upon its workplan for 2009.
