Book (stand-alone)Farmer field schools for family poultry producers
A practical manual for facilitators
2022Also available in:
No results found.A growing number of poultry farmer field schools (FFS) are being implemented in developing countries by a wide range of actors. Experience over the past two decades has shown that good-quality facilitation and learning activities are key to the success and long-term sustainability of poultry FFS. This manual provides practical information and activities that help facilitators establish and implement good-quality FFS. It focuses on working with women and men poultry producers to sustainably enhance production, productivity and marketing in any family poultry production system, ranging from extensive to small-scale intensified, in line with producers’ aspirations and local conditions. The first module of the manual covers poultry FFS establishment and learning activities, and the second provides “need-to-know” information on poultry production and health and FFS facilitation. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetImproving water productivity in the field with farmers: Farmers Field Schools on water in Jordan 2022
Also available in:
No results found. The North Jordan Valley (NJV) is located in the northwest of Jordan and it has a subtropical climate with warm winters and hot summers, with a mean annual rainfall of about 350 mm. The warm climate made the area an important agricultural area that mainly produces citrus. Vegetables (e.g., hot peppers, eggplants, okra and others) and other fruit trees (e.g., banana, grapes and date palm) are cultivated in the area as well. Water deficiency is evident in this area and the Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) adopted reduced water allocations (quotas) for farmers in NJV. For the local community in NJV, agriculture is the main employment sector and the main source of income. In addition to scarce water, the major challenges faced by farmers are the high prices of agricultural inputs and low yield prices. Producing more benefits with less water (increased water productivity) is one of the most strategic response to such challenges. Benefits can be either biophysical (yield, expressed in mass unit – kg), economical (returns, expressed in monetary terms – $) or even social when considering job created or dietary value. The analysis of local crop production showed that there is a significant gap between the actual yields and the attainable yields. the reader will know more about FAO's farmer field schools (FFS), its methodology and implementation. in addition to Farming practices implemented through FFSs including the objective of the FFS for each practice, the method applied by the FFS in the demonstration field and the method applied by traditional farmers. -
Book (series)Driving behaviour change in livestock Farmer Field Schools
A step-by-step facilitator’s manual for integrating social and behavioural science to improve livestock health and production
2025Also available in:
No results found.Developed under FAO’s RENOFARM (Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation) initiative, this practical manual serves as a complementary resource for livestock Farmer Field School (FFS) facilitators. It introduces established social and behavioural science methods and frameworks, offering an innovative lens to address the persistent challenge of turning knowledge into consistent on-farm action. The manual outlines a structured four-step process for seamlessly integrating social and behavioural science approaches into existing livestock FFS programmes. FFS facilitators will be guided in identifying which recommended practices are difficult for farmers to adopt, diagnose structural, capacity-related, socioeconomic, cultural, and motivational barriers, and ultimately support sustainable behaviour change through collaborative solution designing. These methods are illustrated with real-world examples from extensive on-site validation.By introducing social and behavioural science frameworks into the FFS approach, this manual addresses a central challenge in agricultural development: good practices only make an impact if they are adopted. By supporting the uptake of healthier and more sustainable livestock practices, it contributes to reducing the need to use antimicrobials, ultimately strengthening rural livelihoods and the resilience of agrifood systems.
