Synopsis (short abstract) Agriculture is one of the most important pillars of Moldova’s economy. With sustainable crop production reliant upon the availability of pest/disease/drought-resistant varieties that perform well under local conditions, production requirements can only be addressed through the conservation of local plant genetic resources and the availability of varieties of plant genetic material. With few mechanisms in place in the country, the project was designed to improve the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment to enhance the sustainable conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources, through cooperation and exchange of material, knowledge and experience among stakeholders. It also aimed to build capacities at the national level.

    Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of Kyrgyzstan’seconomy and accounts for one quarter of Gross Domestic Product(GDP). The sector is the largest source of employment in the country,engaging around half of the economically active population.A significant number of Kyrgyz private veterinarians are unaware oftheir rights and responsibilities, while local authorities lack awarenessof the role of private veterinarians within the community. To date,the sizeable international investment made in the animal healthand production sector has been planned without the participationof the real service providers, namely the veterinarians, and managedby non-professional agencies. To redress this imbalance, the projectaimed to establish a National Veterinary Association and a continuingeducation system for the country’s private veterinarians.

    Geographical indication (GI) schemes can play a special role in promoting sustainable rural development, improving farm income and opening new export potential. Natural factors such as soil, climate and plant varieties play a major role in producing a unique product. Usually, GIs comprise knowledge and skills passed on from generation to generation, helping to protect local heritage. This report is a synthesis of the five national reviews of the legal and institutional frameworks in Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, and the Russian Federation. It has been developed on the expert level to raise awareness and to serve as guidance for further activities to be considered and developed at a technical level.

    Strengthening the Capacity of Farmers’ Associations to Increase Production and Marketing of Root Crops, Fruits and Vegetables in Federated States of Micronesia - TCP/MIC/3601 2020

    The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) faces a number of challenges in ensuring food security and sustainable livelihoods for a growing population. These include a stagnant economy, limited employment, increasing poverty, limited agriculture and an epidemic of nutritional disorders. The country is also highly vulnerable to the effects of natural disasters and climate change, in particular given its number of low-lying atolls. FSM is also affected by drought as a result of El Niño. Prior to the project, one of the major constraints to increasing domestic agriculture production in FSM was a lack of farm inputs or appropriate sustainable crop production and soil management technologies for farmers to increase local production of food crops, fruits and vegetables. Poor soils, pest and diseases outbreaks were also prevalent. With limited market opportunities and low competitive advantages of local agricultural products. Agricultural production in the FSM was far below the level needed to meet the domestic demand. In addition, the Department of Resources and Development had limited technical capacity to provide effective extension support services to farmers. In the context outlined above, the project aimed to strengthen the capacity of farmers’ associations in Yap and Pohnpei to increase domestic agricultural production, both for import substitution and potential export opportunities. The desired increase in agricultural production was expected to be linked with a focus on the development of marketing skills, allowing farmers to supply consistent and high-quality produce for local market and potential export markets, thereby increasing their income level. This project has contributed to the capacities of farmers to supply a consistently higher quantity and quality of root crops, fruits and vegetable to both the local market and potential export markets.
