ProjectReducing Rural Youth Migration in Kenya - GCP/KEN/087/ITA 2022
Also available in:
No results found. The key focus of the project was on strengthening the enabling environment to provide alternatives to youth migration, and on harnessing the potential of migration for local development by directly supporting key policy processes in the area of migration, social protection and value chain development. The project engaged rural youth and other value chain actors in productive activities along agrifood value chains and assisted youth entrepreneurs to scale up their businesses along selected value chains. The capacity of youth was increased through technical and business training, coaching and business mentoring, as well as by facilitating access to markets, credit, input provision and non financial support services. At institutional level, technical assistance was provided in the review and finalization of five government policies. At field level, the project organized 1 087 young into 58 groups along four value chains (herbs and spices, improved local chicken, indigenous vegetables and pig) with high potential for employment and income generation. Relevant training was provided, along with assets and inputs worth USD 210 794 to support agro enterprises at farm level. Youth were also engaged in business to business roundtables, as a result of which 325 youth (190 male and 135 female) benefited from improved linkages to other markets and off takers. In terms of improving access to finance, 40 youth groups from 29 wards across the six sub counties benefited from loans totalling KES 5.7 million disbursed by the Youth Enterprise Development Fund. -
ProjectEnhancing Rural Livelihoods: Integrating Social Protection and Agriculture for Sustainable Development - FMM/GLO/157/MUL 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Globally, rural populations, heavily reliant on agriculture for their sustenance, are disproportionately affected by poverty. In order to meet the global poverty reduction and food security objectives of the SDGs, measures addressing their unique constraints are needed to enable them to actively engage in a beneficial process of agricultural growth and rural transformation. Zambia and Timor-Leste, the two target countries, have been grappling with persistent rural poverty, with high proportions of their populations living below the poverty line. COVID-19 exacerbated these challenges by disrupting agricultural markets, limiting mobility and shrinking income opportunities in rural areas. Strengthening coherence between social protection and agricultural interventions is critical not only for responding to the immediate challenges posed by COVID 19 but also for laying the basis for more inclusive economic development and resilience-building pathways in the medium and long term. This requires strengthening the institutional linkages between social protection and agricultural interventions, and the systems and human capacities required to manage these linkages. Against this background, the subprogramme supported the implementation of two programmes that involved the joint delivery of social protection and agriculture support – one in Timor Leste and one in Zambia. -
ProjectEmpowering Rural Communities in Central Asia through Digital Transformation in Agriculture - FMM/GLO/171/MUL 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Rural communities in Europe and Central Asia grapple with a triple challenge: the urban-rural gap, gender disparities and the digital divide, which perpetuate a cycle of decline characterized by limited economic opportunities and inadequate services. Digital technologies have the potential to significantly alleviate the challenges encountered in rural areas by enabling instant virtual communication and access to e-services. Grounded in the FAO 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative (DVI), which aims to transform villages in Europe and Central Asia into hubs that are smarter, greener and richly digitally connected and interconnected, the project focused on accelerating the digital transformation of agriculture and rural areas in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Its efforts centred on laying the foundations for the development of digital villages across the countries with the goal to empower every village and rural community to utilize digital technologies to increase agricultural productivity and access to services and uplift rural livelihoods by leveraging their local strengths.
