No results found.Kenya and Malawi face persistent rural poverty, which was worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic as containment measures disrupted markets, limited mobility and reduced employment opportunities in both on-farm and off farm sectors. In response, this subprogramme, led by FAO in collaboration with the Governments of Kenya and Malawi, was designed to tackle these challenges. The pandemic had a particularly severe impact on rural women, who, as primary caregivers and key participants in the informal sector, faced limited access to information, decision making, and resilience-building opportunities. Inclusive agrifood systems, the main source of rural employment, are crucial in addressing poverty in these regions. The subprogramme aimed to address immediate livelihood constraints caused by COVID-19 while laying the groundwork for more resilient and inclusive food systems. By integrating social protection, livelihood support, early warning systems, and community engagement, the approach seeks to establish sustainable development pathways that enhance resilience and promote inclusive economic growth in rural areas. -

No results found.Agricultural innovation, the process that brings new or existing products, processes or ways of organization into use for the first time in a specific context, is central to transformative change of agrifood systems in least developed countries, low-income Land-locked Developing Countries, and low-income Small Island Developing States, as well as food crisis countries and large countries with high concentrations of poverty. The Hand-in-Hand (HIH) Initiative, launched in 2019, is a flagship of FAO and one of its core priority programme areas. It was developed as an innovative, comprehensive and fully integrated approach to support countries in addressing the above-mentioned issues. The overall objective of this subprogramme was the design, implementation, testing and strengthening of an alternative systematic approach to promoting agricultural innovation, linked systematically to recommendations for programmatic activities and investments for all HIH beneficiary countries. The support provided spanned across four FAO regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, the Near East and North Africa, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific. -

No results found.This subprogramme supported seven countries – Indonesia, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Tajikistan, Uruguay, Uzbekistan – in accelerating the implementation of their Food Systems Transformation Pathways (National Pathways) in the context of the Food Systems Coordination Hub (the Hub), a UN partnership that aims to support countries in establishing food systems that are sustainable, equitable, healthy and resilient. The targeted support provided to the seven selected countries was tailored through the results of a survey that the Hub conducted in February 2022, which revealed that, among other things, these countries required technical assistance, increased access to knowledge and peer learning opportunities, assistance with science-backed decision-making and innovation practices, knowledge of leveraging finance and other means of implementation, and support in the planning of progress reviews.
