Synopsis (short abstract) Contracting Parties of the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture agree to take appropriate measures to encourage natural and legal persons within their jurisdiction who hold plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) listed in Annex I to include such PGRFA in the Multilateral System. Contracting Parties are therefore called on by the International Treaty to encourage natural and legal persons in their territories to voluntarily include the PGRFA they hold in the Multilateral System, so as to balance the facilitated access these stakeholders enjoy with a contribution of their crops.This briefing note is part of a wide range of activities by the Secretariat of the International Treaty to support Contracting Parties in these efforts and to provide practical information to the range of possible providers. The Governing Body of the International Treaty, at its Tenth Session in 2023, requested the Secretariat "to make Treaty National Focal Points aware of the briefing note for natural and legal persons interested in including material in the Multilateral System, so that they can use it as a basis to encourage and support natural and legal persons in their respective countries to make material available in the Multilateral System."

    Severe monsoon weather conditions since mid-June 2022 have disrupted the lives and livelihoods of 33 million people in Pakistan, mainly located in rural areas. Rainfalls were significantly higher than the national 30-year average, leading to devastating floods and landslides that wiped out agricultural lands, livestock assets, forests and critical agricultural infrastructure. The climate-induced disaster struck rural communities amid growing economic and food security challenges, compounding their vulnerabilities and exhausting their resilience. Rural communities, who represent 80 percent of the poorest people in Pakistan and depend on agriculture and livestock keeping for their livelihoods, were among the hardest hit by the disaster, especially in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab provinces. The document provides an overview of the impact of the disaster on agricultural livelihoods and food security as well as FAO's planned response and funding requirements.

    There has been a marked upward trend in production and consumption of fruits and vegetables in Asia and the Pacific in recent years. Along with rising consumer demand has come greater awareness of food safety issues and increased need for convenience and quality. Selection of high quality horticultural produce for processing and implementation of good practices during processing operations are required to assure both the quality of the produce and the safety of the final product. This technical guide reviews, from a theoretical and practical perspective, the critical issues that must be addressed for fresh-cut produce to meet consumer demand for convenience, quality and safety. A case study on fresh-cut processing in Thailand is included. The guide should be of practical value to small processors, trainers and extension workers who provide support to individuals engaged in production of fresh-cut tropical produce for sale.

    The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.
