    The livelihoods of many, particularly the rural poor, are based on secure and equitable access to and control over land, fisheries and forests. Governance of tenure is a crucial element in determining if and how people, communities and others are able to acquire rights to use and control land and other natural resources. Compliance with the principles and good practices set out in the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) will help to promote sustainable social and economic development that can help eradicate poverty and food insecurity. In line with this approach, the Government of Germany-funded project, which was part of a wider FAO multidonor-funded umbrella programme to support the implementation of the VGGT globally, supported the delivery of a series of Learning Programmes specific to the VGGT and targeted country actors engaged in different aspects of the VGGT: i) VGGT fundamentals: Implementing responsible governance of tenure; ii) Governing land for women and men; and iii) Safeguarding land tenure rights in the context of agricultural investments –FPIC.

    The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, known as the VGGT, promote secure tenure rights and equitable access to land, fisheries and forests. Their overarching goals are to achieve food security for all, and support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food. Liberia, Mongolia and Sierra Leone are among the first countries to make significant progress in implementing the VGGT. Maintain ing government commitment and the general momentum around the VGGT is key to ensuring their internalization, and related processes in national programmes.

    In Sierra Leone, the implementation of the globally agreedVoluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance ofTenure of Lands, Fisheries and Forestry in the Context ofNational Food Security (VGGT) began in February 2014under the German-funded project “Support forCountry-Level Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelineson the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land,Fisheries and Forests” (referred to as VGGT ProjectPhase I), which ended on 31 July 2016. Phase I led tothe creation of a comprehensive institutional frameworkrequiring regular and ongoing meetings among keystakeholders from both government and civil societyorganizations.The present project was designed to leverage the benefitsof the implementation of the VGGT and to sustain theimplementation of the key emerging activities, localizingthe implementation of the VGGT at the district level. Thisproject provided the opportunity to incorporate lessonslearned during VGGT Project Phase I and incorporateother stakeholders who had not been fully engagedduring the first phase – in particular the private sector,members of parliament, local authorities etc. – in VGGTimplementation. The importance of continuing toimplement key and high-level activities ensured furtherpolitical buy-in and the application of VGGT principles,not least through the implementation of the newlyapproved National Land Policy (NLP).The overall aim of the project was to sustain theimplementation of the VGGT in Sierra Leone. This was tobe achieved through three main outputs:• A multistakeholder platform that continues topromote, implement and mainstream the VGGT.• Stakeholders in Parliament and at district levelsensitized on the VGGT and on the implementation ofthe NLP.• Support for the implementation of the newly approvedkey natural resources-related sector policies (the NLPand the Fisheries Policy).

    With the current Second Growth and Transformation Plan (2015-2020), the Government of Ethiopia expects the agro-industrial sector to play key role in economic growth of the Country. Accordingly, the creation of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been identified as one of the key mechanisms for accelerating the development of the sector and the structural transformation of agriculture. Agro-industrial parks will play a significant role in transitioning Ethiopia from an agricultural-led into an industrial-led economy. In view of that, the development of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been prioritized in Ethiopia’s national development strategy and four Agro Industrial Growth Corridors have been selected for piloting the establishment of four Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks. The initiative aims at driving the structural transformation of the Ethiopian economy while reducing rural poverty and creating a better environment for increased investments in agro-processing and allied sectors. Since 1981, FAO has been a strong partner of the Government of Ethiopia towards the achievement of national food security and economic growth goals. FAO is working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to empower value chain actors and to promote inclusive, efficient and sustainable agricultural value chains. The present document is the fourth one of a series of detailed analyses of prioritized commodities, which will lead to inclusive, sustainable and stronger agricultural value chains in the Agro-Commodities Procurement Zone of the pilot Integrated Agro-Industrial Park in Central-Eastern Oromia.

    Due to more and more frequent extreme climate events (floods, drought, and frosts) and due to the changes in precipitation (amounts, seasonality, intensity) and warming temperatures that are impacting rainfed agriculture and changing growing seasons, the Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture (MOJA) of the Islamic Republic of Iran asked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide assistance in setting up an improved agriculture monitoring system, based on integral use of advanced geospatial technologies to support development of the techniques, policy and investment conditions to achieve sustainable agricultural development under the current changing conditions of climate. The project has focused on the identification of state-of-the-art methods and strategy for acreage and yield estimation, based on an assessment of the existing monitoring methodology, optimized through the use of remote sensing. In addition, the project benefitted from the availability of multi-temporal satellite images for testing and monitoring of a range of crops in 3 selected pilot areas: the provinces of Zanjan and Mazandaran and the region of the south of Kerman. The publication reports data collected, processes followed and results obtained at this stage of the still not completely concluded study.
