Food safety regulatory authorities are responsible for safeguarding health and fair trade of food by ensuring that food distributed meets relevant food standards. To achieve this, sound food safety policies and risk management activities are required to ensure that food safety issues of highest importance are identified and appropriate control measures are implemented. The Principles of Risk-Based Meat Inspection and their Application presents key general principles and highlights the minimum requirements for a properly functioning Risk-Based Meat Inspection system. It is primarily designed for senior management, heads of meat inspection services and competent authorities responsible for decision-making on the establishment of policies and standards, the design and management of inspection programmes, and equivalence agreements with trading partners. It also targets private sector operators, such as meat processors and traders, who are ultimately responsible for the production and marketing of safe and suitable food. It is expected that the publication of this guidance document will bring on board all contributors to the meat value chain and advocate for a shift of attitudes towards acceptance of an evidence-based approach to meat inspection. -
Book (stand-alone)GuidelineGuidelines for risk-based fish inspection 2009Fish and fishery products are nutritious and healthy and are an important source of food and livelihood for many millions of people worldwide. However, if such products are not handled and processed correctly the consumer may be at risk. Fish inspection is concerned with ensuring that the consumer has access to safe and nutritious fish and fish products, whether the fish is from domestic sources of supply, imported or to be exported to consumers in another country. The present guidelines are des igned to complement the FAO Risk-based food inspection manual, and consist of five main sections: 1) introduction, 2) important characteristics of fish as food, food safety hazards, and the risk-based approach to fish inspection, 3) key elements of the fish inspection process, 4) the knowledge and understanding required by fish inspectors in order to carry out their duties, and 5) sources of further information on the topics covered in these guidelines. Key references that provide more informati on on the topics covered in these guidelines and that are recommended further reading are listed at the end of the final chapter. These guidelines will assist fish inspectors to carry out these responsibilities and are designed to be used in conjunction with the generic food inspection procedures described in the FAO Food and nutrition paper 89 Risk-based food inspection manual.

Book (stand-alone)GuidelineFAO/WHO/OIE Guidelines for the surveillance, management, prevention and control of Trichinellosis 2007Trichinellosis is a parasitic disease that in the past has not always been recognised for its importance. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that greater priority should be given to this zoonosis because of its health and economic impact, particularly in resource-poor countries. It is now also recognised as a re-emergent problem in Latin America, eastern Europe and Asia. As is the case for all zoonoses, the control of trichinellosis requires the very close collaboration between b oth Veterinary and Medical public health Services at a national level. It was with the aim of assisting those responsible for trichinellosis control and prevention that these Guidelines were prepared and jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). This joint publication is a reflection of the importance the three organisations place on working together to assist their Member Co untries in designing, implementing and standardising control strategies against zoonoses on both national and international levels. These Guidelines are an example of the outcome of the long-term collaboration by FAO, WHO and OIE to educate and organise the surveillance and control of parasitic diseases worldwide.

No results found.Between 2 and 17 January 2024, following a request by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoA&F), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in close cooperation with the Food Security Technical Secretariat (FSTS) and the State Ministries of Agriculture, carried out its annual Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) to estimate the 2023 crop production and assess the food supply situation throughout the 18 states of the country. The report's recommendations are to provide immediate response to the needs of the population most affected by acute food insecurity as well as to support the recovery of the agriculture sector, increasing food production and farmers’ incomes, and enhancing efficiency along the value chain to reduce production costs. -

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
