Synopsis (short abstract) Locusts in CCA General situation during June 2018 Forecast until mid-August 2018 Moroccan Locust (DMA) mating and egg-laying were in progress in most countries. During the forecast period, its natural cycle will come to an end. Italian Locust (CIT) hopper development was in progress and fledging started in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Migratory Locust (LMI) hopper development continued in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and started in the Russian Federation. For both CIT and LMI, mating and egg-laying will start during the forecast period. Since the beginning of the national campaigns, about 3 066 000 ha have been treated in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA).

    General Situation during February and March 2021 Forecast for April 2021 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hatching started significantly earlier than last year in Tajikistan, as a result of a warm weather and close to the normal rainfall in February. In Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, DMA hatching was recorded during the second and third decades of March. During the forecast period, DMA hopper development will continue in the above countries while hatching will start in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Russian Federation as well as in Azerbaijan and Georgia. Italian Locust (CIT) hatching may start by the end of the forecast period in southern Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries. By the end of March, overall 5 818 ha have been treated against DMA in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which is more than in March 2019 (1 500 ha), but less than in 2020 (13 000 ha).

    Moroccan Locust (DMA) hopper development was in progress in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation while it was coming to an end in Azerbaijan and Georgia as well as in southern Central Asian (CA) countries where fledging and even mating had already started. Cross-border movements of adult groups were reported. During the forecast period, DMA breeding will generalize in all those countries and the species will start disappearing in southern CA. Italian Locust (CIT) hatching occurred and hopper development was in progress in all countries except Azerbaijan and Afghanistan, where it was not reported as a pest. Migratory Locust (LMI) hatching started in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. For both CIT and LMI, fledging will start during the forecast period. Since the beginning of the national campaigns, more than 1 442 000 ha have been treated mainly against DMA hopper bands.

Because of the earlier appearance of the pest, DMA situation is considered as critical in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. During the forecast period, DMA fledging will occur in most countries while hatching followed by hopper development will take place in the Russian Federation and generalize in Georgia and probably Azerbaijan. Italian Locust (CIT) hopper development will continue in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan and hatching will start in the other CCA countries. LMI hatching will also start. Since the beginning of the national campaigns, 464 000 ha have been treated against DMA hopper bands
