Synopsis (short abstract) FAO is committed to corporate environmental responsibility, in line with the efforts of the United Nations to become climate neutral. Environmental and financial efficiency, both at headquarters and in decentralized offices, has resulted in an overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 29% since the start of the programme in 2008 and cumulative annual savings of more than USD 600 000.

FAO recognizes climate change and environmental degradation as threats to the planet and to the credibility and effectiveness of the Organization. Hence, it daily strives to responsibly manage the environmental aspects of its functional operations – i.e. facilities management, air travel and fleet, procurement. While making continual improvement in its environmental performance, FAO has sealed the commitment to be a good environmental steward by launching its Corporate Environmental Responsibil ity Policy on the occasion of the 2016 World Environment Day. The Policy applies to FAO headquarters and decentralized offices and provides criteria for the management of environmental risks related to internal operational areas . FAO has a holistic global environmental responsibility framework and, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, it has embedded environmental protection into activities by: a. Maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing all sources of the Greenhouse Gas Emission s; b. Implementing a circular economy strategy through sustainable procurement and waste management; c. Greening the logistic aspects related to meetings and conferences.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), guided by the FAO Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) Strategy 2020-2030 and the Strategy for Sustainability Management in the UN System 2020-2030, and in coordination with other UN agencies undertaking the Greening the Blue initiative, is constantly seeking to enhance and augment the sustainability portfolios of its facilities and daily operations. The current report describes and showcases greening initiatives and achievements from across FAO, along with the environmental performance of the Organization for the year 2024. These achievements are mainly related to the planning and implementation of initiatives at headquarters and in decentralized offices (DOs).

The Corporate Environmental Responsibility Policy supports the implementation of the FAO Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy 2020-2030. This Strategy serves as the framework for environmental sustainability action and articulates concrete objectives and targets in facilities and operations, as well as commitments for environmental mainstreaming throughout the Organization.
