Synopsis (short abstract) This technical brief discusses the process of development of the Uganda national strategy on post-harvest loss reduction in grain supply chains which was developed in the framework of the project using the FAO food loss analysis methodology. The brief shares recommendations and lessons learned from the development of the strategy, which can be used or adapted by governments developing a postharvest loss reduction strategy to coordinate interventions, engage with key stakeholders, and invest and allocate resources to achieve post-harvest loss reduction goals.

This report summarizes the main activities implemented under the NEPAD–FAO Fish Programme (Support to the Implementation of the Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa-NFFP), focusing particularly on how its Output B4 “Mechanisms established for impro ving the performance of the fisheries and aquaculture post-harvest chain and regional trade” has been achieved. This first phase of the programme was carried out in the Volta Basin, which served as a pilot beneficiary area, to inform similar interventions in other shared waterbodies.

    Reducing post-harvest fish losses for improved food security 2014

    Post-harvest losses (PHL) are defined as a reduction in quantity, or quality or monetary value of fish in the supply chain. PHL of fish occur in all fisheries or value-chains, to varying extents. Losses typically result in lost income and a loss in the availability of fish as food hence they represent a major food security concern in Africa, where many people are food insecure.

    The UN Rome-based agencies joint project aimed to improve smallholder food security and incomes in food deficit areas by reducing food losses. The Project contributes to the African Union Malabo Declaration (AUC, 2014) in which Member States committed to halve the levels of post-harvest losses by 2025. It also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, specifically to target 12.3 that aims to halve food waste and reduce post-harvest losses by 2030. This technical brief presents the FAO methodology used to carry out studies on food loss analyses and the major findings and recommendations formulated to reduce post-harvest losses in the selected food supply chains in Burkina Faso (maize, sorghum, and cowpea), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (maize and rice) and the Republic of Uganda (maize, beans and sunflower), in the framework of the United Nations Rome-based Agencies’ joint project.
