ProjectRegional E-Agriculture for the Caribbean – A Post COVID-19 Mechanism to Promote Resilient Agri-Food - TCP/SLC/3808 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The Caribbean region faces significant challenges due to the shifting global economic environment and climate change. Recognizing the critical role of digital transformation in addressing these issues and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has developed a regional information and communications technology (ICT) strategy and roadmap to promote socio-economic development and resilience. Over the past two decades, the Caribbean has made notable progress in ICT infrastructure, coverage, affordability, and internet access, positioning itself well to leverage digital solutions in various sectors, including agriculture. However, the adoption of e-agriculture—ICT applications in the agricultural sector—has been slow, delayed by disparities in ICT access between urban and rural areas, a lack of regional governance frameworks, and limited awareness among farmers. Several Caribbean countries have begun developing national ICT and e-agriculture policies, such as Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Grenada, and the Commonwealth of Dominica. Despite these efforts, barriers like limited knowledge, insufficient educational capacity, and lack of pilot projects and support systems persist. -
ProjectDigital Villages LAC - TCP/RLA/3809 2025

A diversified economy linked to dynamic markets is needed to meet the No Poverty and Zero Hunger Goals (SDGs 1 and 2). In rural regions, more and more communities are engaged in sustainable tourism and agritourism, moving away from farming activities to generate income. In 2020, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) signed a memorandum of understanding to promote tourism as a mechanism to diversify income. In the same vein, FAO's 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative is attempting to connect 1 000 rural communities through the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) platform. This project sought to implement the 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region through a pilot learning programme, documentation and evidence of the outcome in 20 villages, with a view to scaling it out to at least 100 additional communities in the region. The expansion of the project demands that connections be established to mobilize government, international financial institution (IFI) and private sector resources. As part of this digitalization strategy, it is necessary to enhance digital literacy in order to allow beneficiaries to effectively use the tools therein and to increase the reach of policies and support services. Digital strategies need to be enhanced for the promotion and sale of local services, while a better relationship is required with both the private sector (tourism agencies, private enterprises, innovation) and the public sector. Thanks to this project, governments, IFIs, the private sector and FAO have applied strategies on the use of digital technologies in rural agrifood systems, where other tourism initiatives already existed. -
ProjectEmpowering Rural Communities in Central Asia through Digital Transformation in Agriculture - FMM/GLO/171/MUL 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Rural communities in Europe and Central Asia grapple with a triple challenge: the urban-rural gap, gender disparities and the digital divide, which perpetuate a cycle of decline characterized by limited economic opportunities and inadequate services. Digital technologies have the potential to significantly alleviate the challenges encountered in rural areas by enabling instant virtual communication and access to e-services. Grounded in the FAO 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative (DVI), which aims to transform villages in Europe and Central Asia into hubs that are smarter, greener and richly digitally connected and interconnected, the project focused on accelerating the digital transformation of agriculture and rural areas in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Its efforts centred on laying the foundations for the development of digital villages across the countries with the goal to empower every village and rural community to utilize digital technologies to increase agricultural productivity and access to services and uplift rural livelihoods by leveraging their local strengths.
