Book (stand-alone)The Linkages Between Migration, Agriculture, Food Security and Rural Development
Technical report
2018Also available in:
No results found. This report examines the complex interlinkages of migration with agriculture, food security and rural development. It does so by taking stock of the literature and the evidence from both developed and developing countries focusing on why people from rural areas decide to migrate. The linkages between migration, agriculture and food security can be direct with rural people migrating because they do not see viable options for overcoming poverty, hunger and malnutrition within their own rural communities. However, migration is complex and caused by several interrelated factors. The linkages between migration, agriculture and food security can often be indirect and realized in different contexts. The report focuses on significant effects on migration that can arise through the interactions of food security with conflict, poverty, shocks and emergencies, environmental degradation and climate change, but also through household strategies to cope with the risk of hunger and malnutrition. -
BookletStrengthening sector policies for better food security and nutrition results: Rural Migration
Policy Guidance Note No. 10
2017Migration is part of the development process and can contribute to achieving food and nutrition security, although tangible benefits and opportunities are maximized when adequate policies are in place and decent working conditions are ensured. The relation between migration, food security and nutrition is complex and very much context-specific. On the one hand, food and nutrition insecurity is among the root causes of migration out of rural areas, together with other socio-economic factors. On the other hand, migration can have different impacts – positive or negative – on the four dimensions of food security. Strengthening policy coherence is crucial to harness the development potential of migration for food security and nutrition. In particular, policy interventions need to both reduce the pressure to migrate, by addressing the root causes of migration, and ensure safe, orderly and regular movements of people. This guidance note illustrates policy changes that have proved successful in ensuring greater synergy between the rural migration and food security and nutrition policy agendas.Visit the Webpage

Book (series)Evaluation of the project "Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security/Nutrition to mitigate migration flows"
Project code: GCP/GAM/040/EC
2023Also available in:
No results found. This terminal evaluation reviews the "Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security/Nutrition to mitigate migration flows” project. The objective of the project was to “Contribute to inclusive and equitable sustainable growth in the agricultural sector and reduce food insecurity and malnutrition to mitigate migration flows to Europe”. The project was pivotal in supporting the first-ever key policies such as the National Cooperative Policy which was a necessity in the agriculture sector and laid the foundation for the development of strong policies and strategic plans (the national extension policy, the national seed policy) that enhanced the institutional capacities. FAO reinforced the national capacities by supporting institutions at all levels, including capacity development, to prepare, implement, monitor, and evaluate evidence-based policies and programmes, and leverage investments. The project enhanced the participation of various agriculture value chain actors that contributed to the structuring of the value chain system to make it more responsive.
