Synopsis (short abstract) Hainan Province is a major source of winter-vegetables supply to northern China, producing about 4.5 million tonnes annually. Intensive farming has led to excessive use of water, fertilizers and pesticides, and environmental hazards such as soil degradation have jeopardized sustainability of production, making farmers vulnerable to economic loss and distress. The project aimed to support Hainan’s vegetable growers in maintaining sustainability by incorporating advanced green technology from abroad into local production systems, and by building capacity of farmers and other stakeholders in the dissemination of this technology through training workshops and on-site demonstrations.

    La provincia de Hainan es la principal fuente de suministro de hortalizas producidas en invierno para la parte septentrional de China con una producción de unos 4,5 millones de toneladas al año. La agricultura intensiva ha conllevado un uso excesivo de agua, fertilizantes y plaguicidas, y los peligros para el medio ambiente como la degradación del suelo han comprometido la sostenibilidad de la producción, lo cual ha hecho a los agricultores vulnerables a las pérdidas y las dificultades económicas. El objetivo del proyecto era prestar apoyo a los productores de hortalizas de la provincia de Hainan para mantener la sostenibilidad mediante la incorporación de tecnología verde avanzada de otros países en los sistemas locales de producción y el fomento de la capacidad de los agricultores y otras partes interesadas para la difusión de esta tecnología a través de la realización de talleres y demostraciones in situ.

    The CPF reviews existing Chinese Government priorities vis-à-vis past and ongoing FAO interventions to identify the gaps in and future potential for FAO assistance. The CPF provides a framework mechanism and evaluation modality for both the Government of China and the FAO to build on their successful working relationship to date and to further develop and harness this cooperative effort to ensure that the Chinese agricultural sector reaps the maximum potential benefits from this cooperative rela tionship. The CPF also provides FAO, other UN agencies and international development partners with guidance on FAO‟s agreed priorities with the Government in support of China‟s agricultural and rural development. The CPF also serves as a basis for universities, private enterprises, cooperatives, rural communities and farmers to effectively understand and develop working relationships and cooperation activities though the CPF process. The CPF is a living document, the contents of which will be ad justed over time taking into consideration the changing circumstances and needs of the country. The implementation of the CPF 2012-2015 will be pursued in partnerships as broad as possible and in alignment with the joint efforts of the Government of China and FAO/external development partners for enhanced coordination and aid effectiveness.
