DocumentFactsheetRestablecimiento de la producción de frutas y hortalizas de los agricultores de Swazilandia - TCP/SWA/3501 2017Durante la última década, las escasas precipitaciones y la constante amenaza del cambio climático han dejado a un 21 por ciento de la población de Swazilandia aquejada de inseguridad alimentaria y a casi toda la población sin poder consumir la cantidad adecuada de frutas y hortalizas. Los agricultores de las zonas rurales no tienen muchos conocimientos sobre el modo de maximizar la productividad de sus tierras y asegurar la satisfacción de sus necesidades alimentarias y nutritivas, a pesar de que han de aumentar urgentemente la diversidad de cultivos si se ha de hacer frente a las necesidades en materia de seguridad alimentaria y dietas. Además, el valor de los productos agrícolas importados fue cinco veces superior al de las exportaciones entre 2005 y 2013. Estos factores hicieron que fuera necesario fomentar prácticas agrícolas climáticamente inteligentes y contribuir a la creación de resiliencia y al aumento de los ingresos de los agricultores procedentes de la agricultura.

DocumentFactsheetImproving winter vegetables in the People's Republic of China- TCP/CPR/3503 2017Hainan Province is a major source of winter-vegetables supply to northern China, producing about 4.5 million tonnes annually. Intensive farming has led to excessive use of water, fertilizers and pesticides, and environmental hazards such as soil degradation have jeopardized sustainability of production, making farmers vulnerable to economic loss and distress. The project aimed to support Hainan’s vegetable growers in maintaining sustainability by incorporating advanced green technology from abroad into local production systems, and by building capacity of farmers and other stakeholders in the dissemination of this technology through training workshops and on-site demonstrations.

DocumentFactsheetReducción de la desigualdad en baluchistán a través del desarrollo agrícola sostenible - GCP/PAK/113/USA 2017El Proyecto agrícola en Baluchistán fue formulado para contribuir de manera considerable a aliviar la pobreza y reducir las desigualdades económicas, prestando especial atención a la creación de capacidad de los agricultores y los ganaderos. El proyecto se centró en los agricultores marginados y los pequeños agricultores de hogares de escasos recursos en ocho distritos fronterizos del nordeste de Baluchistán, localizados dentro de una extensión de 100 millas de la frontera con Afganistán. Como p arte del proyecto, se ejecutaron dos proyectos de menor envergadura, denominados de emergencia, en las Zonas Tribales Administradas Federalmente en el noroeste de Pakistán, que se centraron en prestar apoyo pecuario y en impulsar los activos de los medios de vida de las familias desplazadas internamente, así como en garantizar la seguridad alimentaria de los hogares.

However, less attention is being paid to the biodiversity beneath our feet, soil biodiversity, which drives many processes that produce food or purify soil and water. This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats. -

Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction
2019The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.
