Book (stand-alone)The multi-faced role of soil in the Near East and North Africa
Global Soil Partnership Policy Brief No. 1 2019
2019The world’s soils are rapidly deteriorating due to soil erosion, nutrient depletion, loss of soil organic carbon, soil sealing and other threats, but this trend can be reversed provided countries take the lead in promoting sustainable management practices and the use of appropriate technologies. Several scientific reports highlighted in this brief have shown the extent to which soil degradation is threatening food security and water availability, increasing social economic inequality and depleting ecosystems in the NENA region , particularly through desertification . Soil degradation is driven by multiple and complex variables. For this reason, Sustainable Soil Management (SSM) practices and the policies that support them need to fit within a broader natural resource management agenda, one that integrates water security, climate change adaptation, and domestic crop production priorities. A harmonized soil management approach strengthened by policy is vital to creating a coherent framework towards the achievement of this goal. This document supports the aim of all NENA countries to protect soils and demonstrates the value of coordinated and targeted action to safeguard the conservation of soils within the region towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetThe multi-faced role of soil in the Near East and North Africa | Policy brief, Soil salinity 2019Salinization is the most severe threat to soils in the NENA region after soil erosion. Indeed, more than 11 percent of the region’s soils are affected by various levels of soil salinization Salinity has direct effects on the growth and development of plants. Sodic conditions may cause important deterioration of the soil physical properties, indirectly affecting crop growth via increased surface crusting, poor water infiltration, and reduced root zone aeration. The Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (VGSSM) provide recommendations on how to prevent the development of salt-affected soils. If soils are already degraded and prevention is no longer an option, excess salts can be removed from the soil surface and the root zone using a variety of techniques. Under all conditions, the sustainable management of soil resources is key in preventing and combating salinization.

Book (stand-alone)The State of Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture in the Near East and North Africa region
Summary Report
2022The State of Land and Water Resources (SOLAW) in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region is part of a FAO flagship series launched in 2011. Being one of the most land and water scarce region in the world, the preservation of land and water resources is of critical importance to ensure food security and address the increased food demand. The publication aims at providing policy makers, institutions and other stakeholders a comprehensive overview of the current situation for land and water and the effect of climate change and urbanization on food production facilitating informed decision-making. The report provides the latest land and water resource statistics for the region and outlines important challenges that NENA is facing in the lead up to 2030 and beyond. It also presents positive initiatives from the region and a range of options available to help authorities respond to the issues of land and water resources.
