Support for Development of Sustainable Value Chains for Climate-Smart Agriculture - TCP/KYR/3804 2024

The fragmented nature of agricultural value chains (VCs) in Kyrgyzstan prevents most producers from increasing farm-level productivity and expanding export potential. Other important factors behind the vulnerability of the agricultural sector are the country`s exposure to climate change, a lack of water resources and an inadequate use of the water resources that exist. These challenges are exacerbated by poor agricultural practices, with their potential to aggravate food insecurity by further decreasing overall agricultural productivity. This is especially felt by low-income smallholder families in rural communities, who depend on agricultural resources to sustain their livelihoods and whose resilience to climate change is low. Overall, underdeveloped agricultural VCs impede industrial growth and limit export potential.

Agriculture is a pillar of the Republic of Moldova’s RoM economy and serves as the primary source of income in rural areas Approximately 1 9 million people, or 58 percent of the country’s population, live in rural areas, while one quarter of the employed population works in the agriculture sector Generally, however, the sector has low productivity and a high level of informal employment Additionally, over 94 percent of private households in the RoM possess less than 3 hectares of land, which is reflective of the land reforms that occurred during the 1990 s Notwithstanding, agriculture, together with the food processing industry, accounted for USD 1 billion, equivalent to 15 percent of the national GDP, and 30 percent of total exports in 2015 Unemployment affects two thirds of the rural population, while relatively low wages exist in the agriculture sector These factors have both contributed to the pockets of poverty that persist in the country Moreover, wages for rural women are only 76 percent of those of men (on average), further complicating this matter Farmers continue to face several challenges in the advancement of agriculture, including underdeveloped rural infrastructure, poor access to markets and susceptibility to extreme weather events (especially droughts.

Agriculture is a pillar of the Serbian economy, accounting for approximately 10 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP), constituting 20 percent of exports and employing over 20 percent of the working-age population. Within this context, organic agriculture continues to figure more prominently, presenting numerous potential socioeconomic and environmental benefits. Organic agriculture also figures prominently in the agricultural policies of the European Union. In this context, the Farm to Fork strategy aims to increase the share of organic food and farming within the European Union to 25 percent by 2030. As a candidate nation for membership in the European Union, Serbia needs to bring itself in line with this objective.
